I have this macpro from early 2008
2 x 2.8 quadcore intel xeon
upgraded to 12gb 800 mhz ddr2 total
ati radeon hd 2600 256mb
no wifi

what do you think is its value / what shall I expect to sell it for in London ?

also ive seen on many threads people using the number "2.1/3.1/4.1.." next to "mac pro" what do they mean ? i guess they refer to the models/date of release of the machines ? where do i find a guide for them ?

The value is really dependent on the market. Where I live such a system might sell for $200. The problem is that it is no longer receiving new OS updates from Apple. The latest OS officially supported is OS X 10.11 El Capitan which isn't all that old (it was replaced with OS X 10.12 Sierra in September 2016).

It was a very popular system for its day. I recall price comparisons revealed it was very cost effective even when compared to the competition. Unfortunately it the systems which replaced it were significantly more capable and therefore its desirability is not as high (but not as low as the previous models which lost OS support at 10.7 [Lion]).

The 1,1 / 2,1 / 3,1 / 4,1 / 5,1 are model identifies used by Apple. They are as follows:

2006 Mac Pro: 1,1
2007 Mac Pro: 2,1 (this is the same as the 2006 model but it has dual quad core processors)
2008 Mac Pro: 3,1 (this is the one you have)
2009 Mac Pro: 4,1
2010 / 2012 Mac Pro: 5,1
2013 Mac Pro: 6,1

A 2009 model can be upgraded to the 2010 / 2012 firmware after which it will identify as a 5,1 model (though About This Mac still shows it as a 2009 model). However this update alone does not make it a true 5,1...there are differences.

Yes a 2016 MBP will be better than your 2008, except perhaps RAM and drive size depending on how much you get.

Have the same machine as you, around here in Canada, depending on the demand it could range from 300-500 CAD which is around £200 to £350 but check your local buy/resell sources and look at what they’re selling for because it can vary ALOT
