When does free one-year begin?

Silly question that I think I know the answer to but would like confirmation. Supposedly the free year must be set up within 3 months of the date a new Apple device (purchased after September 10) was set up. Does the one-year free Apple TV+ subscription run from November 1 or from the date that the subscription is actually set up/accepted? I assume the latter, but just wanted to check.
