Essentially, anyone with dual processor 800's or above would probably benefit from this. I have a dual gig quiksilver, and my GeForce4MX is nice... but it coughs and hacks on MOHAA in 1280 x 1024 with a lot of action going on.
The ATI9700 was originally expected for the Mac by the end of December or early January. I don't know what the current schedule is as I haven't checked on it in a month or so.

Jeez... now i'm definitely gonna wait for a 2 GHz PPC 970.
You'll want it (with a Radeon 9700 or GeforceFX) when DOOM III comes to the Mac

A GF4MX is nowhere near as fast as a Radeon 9700, and so I'm not sure why you think that "slow on GF4MX" implies "need Radeon 9700 to go fast". Based on my Mac vs PC gaming experience, Apple needs faster processors and faster drivers waaaay more than it needs faster video cards.
Yep, it seems that this dual 1 GHz G4 is hiccupping on processor activity which is not OpenGL related. (quote: with a lot of action going on). Lot of action: many sounds, a lot of explosions, etc.
I've made the mistake to replace a (working) Radeon AGP retail with a Radeon 8500 in my G4 400 (with 1 GB RAM... don't laugh). I don't experience any frame rate increase with newer games (RTCW, MOHAA).... The one BIG thing that I do experince is that now I can play Quake 3 @ 1600 x 1200. Now that's OpenGL related.

Is there a big difference between the 8500 and 9000?
I just can't believe that ATI has just started shipping the 9000 for Mac, while the 9700 for PC has been around for a month now.
At this rate we'll see the GeForceFX for Mac earlier than the 9700!

And there is no way ATI's Worst Kept Secret is coming before the 9700, anyway it really isn't a suprise we are a month behind, look at our RAM and then look at what you said, do we need faster RAM or ever more killer graphics?
Both.
But nVidia isn't really holding back for the Mac. The GeForce 3Ti an 4Ti didn't come to the Mac a lot later than to the PC. And If nVidia launches it's GeForceFX for Macintosh nobody will worry about the 9700 anymore...

ATI has just started shipping the 9000.... when will they ever ship the 9700? I really hope it'll be at MWSF, but if that's true they might as well NOT ship the 9000 now.
nVidia is a lot quicker. I know the FX is not available for the PC yet, but it will be soon, and I expect it to be available for the Mac shortly after that.
nVida does make chips faster for the mac, ATI is a little slow, but the 9700 should be out soon, maybe by MWSF.

I got a QS02 867 o/c to 1083. i will be buying an nVidia card before i buy Ati. why? nvidia has much better drivers. they supply linux drivers. they supply windows drivers. they put effort into their mac cards and help apple make good drivers.
why do you think the top of the line card for a pmac and the card in all other desktop macs is an nvidia card?
apple knows what it is doing. that is why the ati 9000 pro has 64 RAM where the GF4MX has only 32. it is to give you a reason to get the ati.

nVidia makes better drivers on the PC. ATI makes better drivers on the Mac. Why? ATI has been making Mac drivers for over 5 years. Why is it that you can buy a GF4Ti 4600 for a PowerMac, yet you can't even turn on FSAA? But with a Radeon 8500 you can.... By the time the Geforce FX will be out, I believe ATI should have its R350 (refresh of the 9700) out.
