I've got this one which I really like: http://www.levenger.com/iPad-1262/iPad-Stands-157/Nantucket-Electronics-Seat-12840.aspx

They're on sale right now and I'm even thinking of getting a second one. I have the iPad Air and it fits securely on the stand. Landscape position is probably the best, though portrait works OK, with just being careful not to tip it at the top edge.

I also have a larger easel type lift stand (by the same company, but Levenger has now sold out on the item) which is very secure; but it's much larger and harder to tote around, if I'm on the road.

So it depends on what work I have to do, and also, where I'm doing it, i.e., if I'm not in my office.

ETA: I was lookin' around on the web and found this: http://appadvice.com/appnn/2013/12/review-slope-could-be-the-best-ipad-stand-youll-ever-use

It looks seriously cool, and I'd love to have one just to play around with it. http://appadvice.com/appnn/2013/12/review-slope-could-be-the-best-ipad-stand-youll-ever-use

I would like an iPad Air stand that could work in tandem with Apple's "Smart Case". I used the Otterbox Defender case with an iPad Mini and it worked great however the extra bulk was too much. Therefore I use the Smart Case for most use and when at my desk or on the sofa, I would like to pop the iPad into a stand (with the Smart Case ON) and use my MacBook on my lap. (iPad for video and MacBook for work.) Can anybody suggest an Otterbox Defender style "stand"?

I think you will love this one and it should work with the smart case since it works with my iPad air cases:
