Comparing 2004 Water Cooled Mac PPC G5 (1) with 2005 Air Cooled Mac PPC G5 (2).

Which is faster?

1. 2 2.5 GHZ single core
2. 1 2.3 GHz dual core

Thinking of replacing 1 with 2 because of cooling issues wondering what is faster.

Dual core - totally different technology. One processor with 2 cores is much faster than 2 dual processors. I would go with Late 2005 Dual Core 2.3, or if you want to go Quad, make sure you get the single pump which is more reliable. I have a Quad G5 Late 2005 and it has been stable since day 1.

It turns out I was sent the dual core, dual processor air cooled 2.3Ghz machine with 4GB.

Based on the benchmark data from everymac.com the 2.5Ghz machine is a little faster.

Thanks for responding.

The Quad is only a bit faster.. but it’s a very nice system... while others have issues with cooling system, I never had issues.
