Currently at 12 pro max 128 gb. I’ve used about 70 gb on my phone now. Upgrading to iPhone 13 pro max and debating between 128gb vs 256gb. Any thoughts? What’s the recommendations as far as free space to keep on phone?

I have a 128GB XR with just under 50GB used. I'm going to go for the 256GB. I'm spending so much on a phone, why not go all out. Plus with all the new camera tech I'm figuring they will take up more space.

If you want to use the Pro Res video recording at 4K then you have to get 256GB capacity or bigger so bear that in mind. Apple have put in a software limitation for 1080p on the 128 GB capacity.

Going with 256GB as I want to be able to use ProRes at 4K and I also plan on keeping the 13P for 3 years.

With you using only half the available storage you have a good idea of what you will add during the next year.
As you seem to be a person who updates yearly, what makes you think you’ll use the storage differently to make use of a higher storage tier?

All depends on what you do with your phone and what you plan to do in the future. Normally I would say 128GB, but with that new and better camera and the addition of downloading high res lossless audio from Spotify and Apple Music, files are getting bigger and bigger. Worrying about having to delete stuff to make room for new things really blows.

In this case storage affects available options for video recording so even if you don't normally use that much, it can be a compelling reason to get more storage if that matters to you.

As someone who also owns a PS5 I know that pain ever so well.

I would recommend 256 GB. If you already use 70 GB on your current phone, a new one with 128 GB may leave you with too little free space in the future (especially if you decide to keep the new phone for longer than one year).

256 for most, 512 for some and 1TB for insane people. iCloud 2TB is what our household has so we don't need more than 256GB but my extreme use case is I'll take 1-2 week trips off road out into the woods and I produce Youtube content so I can't upload to iCloud and have a large music library on device so I did 1TB just like my MacBook Pro and iPad are 1 and 2TB respectively. Local storage is huge.

I upgrade every year. Used to have 256 on the 11Pro was using about 110. Thought I’d be fine on the 128. I wasn’t, phone was constantly offloading apps, no music would ever be stored locally. It was a royal pain. I have 733 videos, 88k photos, 247 apps and 2TB of iCloud storage.

I’ve pre-ordered the 256 but really wondering if I should have gone for the 512 because of lossless audio and ProRes (not that I really expect to use ProRes regularly).

I usually go with 256GB, but last year I upgraded to 512GB and it’s been great having all that extra space if needed. I was tempted by the 1TB version as I have on my iPad Pro, but I honestly don’t think I’ll need it this time round even with over 20K of photos and lossless audio as I tend to download and watch videos on my iPad for the bigger screen and use my iPhone as a music player

you are upgrading from 12 PM 128GB and you used 70GB of your storage . So if you continue to upgrade to Iphone 14 next year then answer for your question is a no brainer. BUt if you plan to keep your phone for more than an year then you can get 256GB or even more depending on how long you plan to keep that phone
