The improvements are marginal, why?

If that's the cadence, will a new Apple TV be released very soon?

If I had to guess, they were using up their order needs for the A12 SOC. The second gen 4K was the last device to use it. Once that was done, they refreshed. Alternately, they didn't want to keep making A10X chips for the first gen and just did the A12 model as a stopgap.

The current one now uses the same A15 variant as the iPad mini, with one efficiency core disabled (possibly these were failed chips Apple had stockpiled). It's also cheaper as it doesn't have a fan, and the case is smaller and cheaper to make. Perhaps more critically, the A15 has a much better neural engine that the A12 simply can't match.
