For someone like me who isn't too clued up on things like this can you explain why it would be worth getting an Apple TV?

What channels could I watch if I get one and jailbreak it? I've managed to jailbreak my ipad2 and iPhone so would it be similar to that jailbreaking an Apple TV if I bought one?

I've read loads of threads on various sites but it doesn't tell me(or I've not seen) what channels I would be able to get if I bought one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

If you're in the United States, I would suggest you take a look at XBMC (eden), you can even install that on your computer to see what you can do on it, and look at the addons for it. (including Hulu)

The majority of us jailbreak to take advantage of XBMC. I also have my own personal server and have ripped most (still working on it) of my DVD's and kept in original format and now I watch them through my ATV2 (thanks to JB'ing it).

Once I am done with my project, I am going to jailbreak the one I bought for my father and install hulu for him. I am also going to try set it up so that he can watch movies from my server. (not sure my upload speeds will cut it though).

Free cable (HD channels)
Free DVR (sort of - basically has all the seasons of every tv show) - just have to search
Free movies - why buy DVD's anymore?

Sorry, I know thats not right, but I saved near $100 by getting rid of my cable for this.

A 1080p Apple TV3 will be great...720 is good quality, but 1080p will be even better.

No just for porn, but how do you get to play Internet videos via your ATV2?

You could get Mountain Lion and AirPlay your Mac maybe?

Yes. Actually, there are A LOT Of UK channels. A lot of the devs on the XMBC forum live in the UK.

Its most of them. What I did was search through all the files and favorited the HD channels...not all are HD, but some are good quality. I watched the Oscars, All Star game, The Walking Dead last night in HD on my Apple TV2. Pretty awesome.

When you jailbreak, look into a program called Navi-X. Simply amazing.

Well you could still use Hulu with a VPN (built right in). I am not sure about the other addons and if you can use them. I would still suggest installing XBMC on your computer (at least just for testing purposes). It is free, and you can see if you like it, before actually buying an ATV.

XBMC has a lot of support on their forums as well.

What addon (repo) did you use for that? I am just learning and have found some stuff, but I haven't found anything that has AMC on it yet.

Air Parrot is working for you on your jb atv? It will not work for me no matter what I try.

Yes, it works just fine for me on my jailbroken ATV2. I'm using it right now to type this message from my TV.

I will have to search for it again. If I find it, I'll PM you it. I am going to organize my XBMC and add the Focus theme (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=76954)

cool, now that I have most everything setup the way I want it I configured the bedroom ATV last night. This one is on wifi, I want to find a way to hardwire it, but only if I can get it into the walls somehow.

Next step for me is working on a theme, though I kind of like the default one.

+1 for Navi-X

I watched transformers 3, pirates of the caribbean (latest installment), hangover 2 all in one day last weekend with HD quality.

Saw underworld (latest one) as well recently. The list goes on and the quality is amazing.

Well worth the time and effort to JB the ATV2. I used seas0n pass unthethered.

I am working from europe, and I am experiencing lots of problems lately with NAVIX and Icefilms... Ice just doesn't work for me with Rapidshare, and 2shared movies don't even load.... With NaviX I get an error 9 out of 10 times... but again.. I work from europe....

I'm thinking of getting the new Apple TV...
people say its great to jeailbreak....

is it true you get free cable TV if you do?
also main reason i'd want to get it are the following....
having the option to get ESPN, and hopefully its in HD, i'm in canada, and we're stuck with TSN which sucks...

and second reason, would be to get the middle eastern channels, my dad likes to watch the news, so i figured it would be good....

by jailbreaking it, would it be possible?

hi, all,

is that true that you cannot jailbreak anymore, because the step for iTunes to reload firmware (it's now 5.0) won't work with the jailbreak and seasOnpass, et.?

I had trouble jail waking my father's ATV2 (4.4.2) might be because of the version. Probably good if you have 4.4.4.

I do not feel like writing what is already well detailed here but your problems are on your end and clearly your lack of understanding on how to use the various applications made available to you after a jb. Your advice is incorrect and your experiences are unique to you and not universal. My XBMC, content access and media playback is flawless without quality or performance degradation issues.

Jb'ing an Apple TV gives the device Apple should have built. The best of what Apple had to offer and what is openly available on the market. YMMV but education on how to use something before trying to use it goes a long way in avoiding misunderstanding and frustration.

Is there a guide you can point me to that made your jailbreak flawless? I just spent the whole of yesterday night and this morning (over 6 hours) trying to jailbreak with Firecore and installing XBMC. I followed the steps and typed in the SSH commands with PuTTy, but it was such a nightmare to do. There were a lot of different approaches to installing XBMC and then like boboboo-guy said, a lot of the stuff were broken links.

All I could really get working was streaming from my router, which I think you can do without Jailbreak. I jailbroke it 3 times to make sure I got things correct, and it was the same every time. I tried some of the plug ins which were ok, but Youtube was noticeably worse. What's more is that all of my factory icons were gone. Flickr, Youtube, movies, Netflix. Maybe I don't understand the Apple TV jail break process, but I don't believe I did anything wrong while installing. I looked up some popular plug ins, but couldn't get them to work that smoothly

I suppose the Apple TV black would solve these problems. I'm not too sure.

Any tips would be helpful thanks.

You do not need to jailbreak just for internet video. If you have an iPad then you can just AirPlay internet videos straight from Safari. The catchup TV apps have Airplay as well. (iPlayer, iTV, etc. etc. )

Hi,

Apologies for being a complete novice, I'm not clued up on all things apple. Ive done a bit of research and read through the forum but am still confused. I've got an iPhone 4 and recently decided to take the plunge and get a 27" iMac latest gen. I know for a fact I'm not using this thing to its full potential, in fact I basically just browse on it, but hey I guess I'll learn that with time. What I want to do is watch my *ahem* perfectly legally downloaded films in the other room on the big tv. Will apple tv do this? Would I get any benefit from jail breaking the thing or will it play my downloaded films straight out the box? And if so should I just go for the ATV3 or pay the extra for a jail broken ATV2. I already have cable in the main room so additional channels aren't essential (although the adult ones sound good lol), just basically want to play what's on my iMac on my tv. Id also like to be able to do the same in the bedroom, is this as simple as just getting 2 ATVs or does it not work like that? Again apologies for the noviceness, all this is new to me so I'd really appreciate the advice.

Thanks
