Am I the only one annoyed by it?

I store all my files in iCloud Drive, just give me the option to store all files locally also…

You can...turn off Optimise....forces full size local copies of all.

You can on Mac, not iOS.

Hmm looks like you may be correct. I didn't realise that there wasn't a global setting on iOS/iPadOS.

I stopped using iCloud for nearly all my docs because of lack of this kind of control and visibility, and put them on Dropbox. Many of the limitations of Dropbox (eg editing Pages and Numbers files) are removed by accessing Dropbox through the Files app. Not sure this is well known but was crucial in my move from iCloud Drive to Dropbox.

From the Files app you can right click items in iCloud Drive and "Download now" or "Remove Download" but this isn't what you are looking for.

Will be interested in what other replies turn up.

Go to privacy.apple.com and request all your data (or just iCloud files)

I do this monthly as a backup method to a second external drive.
