hi all
i’ve got an se2020 with a shattered back, and i plan on bringing it in for $99 replacement under applecare which ends at the end of april.

i wonder, if i wait long enough, will apple just replace it with an se2022?

No, they only ever replace like with like. They won’t even change colour for you if the phone is replaced under applecare. There have been a very rare few exceptions if they can’t procure parts.

i got two years out of the phone, perhaps the $99 is better spent on a used or different iphone?

As above stated. They only replace like for likes, so No they will not replace your 2020 model to a 2022 model. Maybe 4-5 years from now if there was a supply constraint and Apple store has 0 stock for 2020, then they will likely replace it with 2022 model.

Apple had replacements for the original iPhone up until about 2013-2014.

So, as stated…you'll get back exactly what you turn in.

If you're covered under your carrier's insurance (Assurant/Assurion/etc) you may have better luck with them.

I mean that entirely depends on you, if the phone isn;t meeting your needs then get a new one. If it’s still meeting your needs I’d say don’t upgrade for the sake of it. Once the newness wears off it’s kinda meh. Felt that when I went iPhone X to Xs to 11Pro

I prefer the SE2's size and home button so for $99, I'd still get it replaced. You get a fresh battery with the replacement as well.

We're upgrading to the SE3s but keeping the SE2 as unlocked backup/travel phone.
