Currently have a 2017 and 2021 ATV 4K and both will only play 4K YouTube videos that are 30fps. If I want to watch something like the LG OLED demo videos on YouTube (HDR), I have to use the native app within my smart TV.

Anyone think that the 2022 version will finally allow us to watch this content on the YouTube app? Mine is coming Friday, but I'm trying to plan out which ATV will go with which TV ahead of time.

AFAIK, the issue is not hardware related, it is related to an ongoing stubborn feud between Apple and Google. So I doubt that will change any time soon. If you want YT HDR videos you are much better off with a Fire TV or your TV's apps.

I just ordered the new Fire TV Cube as I want to watch Youtube 4K HDR. I have a 1st Gen Apple TV 4K that does not do this. I’m very interested to know if the new model does.

I have the 2021 version and it can play 4K60 videos.
Maybe it’s the HDR ones that cause YouTube to only offer 1440p on those.

I can’t find a single 4k60 video on YouTube that plays in 4k. They all max out at 1440p. 4k30 works in 4K no problem.

Are there any 4k60 confirmed non-HDR links you can share so I can test? It’s definitely using the VP9 codec, but just software limited I think.

Same (4K second generation).

Does it also do HDR in YouTube?

That's what my TV says.

Hey, that's the "Honey" demo too! I've been trying that one. :) Thanks for the screenshots.

Ok... so now where does the problem lie on my end... The 2021 ATV we have is maxed out in the video settings, on a 2022 LG OLED. (48" A1)

Thanks for the replies! I just ordered the new ATV and will test it out.
The current Apple TV 4K 2nd gen has worked fine for Youtube 4K HDR for a long time. The new one isn't going to be any different. I'm not sure the OP has their Apple TV configured correctly or they don't really have a 2nd gen unit.

I'm glad you posted this. I got this ATV from my Dad who said it was a 2021 2nd gen 4K.

It is not... uuuugh. I wouldn't have made this post if I knew it was a 2017 model! Thanks everyone.

Thanks… yeah mine is a Gen 1 ATV 4K so this should be an improvement for me. 🙂
