Carrier Will using my 5S VZW SIM in an iPad affect my plan? Please advise

Hello all,

This is a fairly specific question but it is probably common enough someone can answer it for me.

I have an unlimited VZW data plan with my 5S. If I was to purchase a cellular iPad and throw the SIM card in I have 2 concerns:

1: Will it work?
2 (and more important): will it affect/change my data plan?

Basically I am concerned that (somehow) VZW will see the card is in a non-phone device and change the plan from unlimited to (idk lets say) a 2GB tiered or tablet plan. I just don't want to risk my unlimited plan being lost by throwing the card in the iPad. I know that it is not illegal/etc to use a SIM in different devices owned by the same person but I didn't know if VZW has something in place that the plan gets changed or anything. Was wondering if anyone else had this speed bump and knows what happens. Cheers.

Won't affect your unlimited, but it will immediately notify your mother if you visit a porn site.

Okay. So can I take the first part of that response as serious I suppose? If so is this something you have experience with or speculating? I had to do some serious HR and CS work to get them to leave my unlimited plan alone when I got this iPhone and I don't want that all thrown away haha. Thanks.

Yeah, just having a little fun. The sim in the 5s is a nano-sim. You will need a nano to micro sim adapter, a small plastic or metal adapter to put in your ipad. Never, I repeat, Never try to close or use the ipad without a sim card in either the original or adapter. You will need to turn the ipad on again to get it to recognize the 5s sim card. Google this. There are lots of entries of people using Verizon Iphone sim cards in ipads. Good luck.

You need to get FoxFi(Android) or PdaNet(iOS). These will let you create a wireless hotspot using your phone. So there is no need to switch out your sim or worry what Verizon will say or do. I spent the $8 and got FoxFi on my Moto X and it just uses my unlimited data plan.

This is truly what I wont. So this PDANET basically is an app to hotspot without having a hotspot option on the plan? Does it need to be jailbroken? I am worried that 5S/iOS7 will be a while for this but I am willing to wait to save the 150 or whatever bump in price for the LTE ipad.

Meaning that you have been using a Verizon unlimited data phone plan and moving the Sim card into the iPad without issue? If so this relieves my fears regarding potential loss of unlimited plan.

Yes. I had a HTC Thunderbolt (that's how long ago it was) and took the SIM card out of the Thunderbolt and put it in my iPad 3. It recognized it right away. I never had to call Verizon to activate it, but Verizon website does indicate that the device on my "phone" line is an iPad 3.

Well, I can't use my iPad as a phone. There's no phone feature. Basically, you loose your phone # because there's no way you can receive or make phone calls through your iPad.

As for Verizon, you won't get in trouble with Verizon.

No they know what device you're using. They just can't do anything about it. Part of their spectrum deal with the FCC is that end users may use their sim in any device.

I've used my unlimited phone sim in:

iPad
iPhone
Android phones
Mifi devices
Cisco routers with their ehwic 4G LTE module

MyVerizon instantly updates and shows what device I have on the line. Nothing changes on the plan though.

Never had an issue.

Though for my ipad I mostly just turn on the hotspot on my phone. I pay the $20/mo for the unlimited LTE hotspot on the phone. Works with the built in hotspot of iOS.

I don't even use it as a phone. But verizon has a cool verizon messages app (only for tablets) where people can text and mms u on your real verizon phone number on ur iPad.

So setup call forwarding on ur verizon account to another line and u will never miss a call. U will always get ur texts via verizon messages app.

1. All verizon tablets comes with hotspot enabled. So u can use hotspot feature on iPad for free! Unlimited hotspot included if u use verizon sim from phone in ur iPad.

2. Per FCC block c agreement. Verizon cannot restrict sim switching on any lte devices. So verizon cannot stop u from using 500gb of data on ur iPad or mifi device if u wanted to.

If u had ATT sim and tried this same stuff. Att would audit u and nail u and disable ur data for the month.

3. This is why verizon is forcing people off unlimited data. They cannot throttle data like att.

This is great information. Do you know if call forwarding can be sent to a Google phone number and some app in someway then sends the phone call back to your phone anyway (with the SIM in an LTE iPad and the phone tethered). For instance I have a Google line that forwards to my phone. I am curious to know if I can forward this line to the Google line and if there is an app from Google that lets you call direct from a Google line. Just curious about if there is an option similar to this or if this would work.
