Settings should go to landscape unless you have orientation lock engaged.

I restored it and it does now after I go into Settings>General. I don't rotate on an 8 plus I have on the home screen on it nor my Max so it must be something to do with ios 12

Think apple must’ve changed the behaviour of the home screen in iOS 12. It used to work on my 8 plus.

I think it has to be on standard but it still doesn't work on the home screen

Yeah the home screen thing was by default for the Max. I don’t think many people actually use the phones in landscape while on the home screen.
