I'm at a loss as to which forum to put this so feel free to suggest another forum if appropriate...

I've got an older AMD based XP Pro box that has been running the iTunes that my ATV streams from. I'm finally to the point where it can be retired from backup PC duty to headless "stash in cupboard" server...

I've got a raid 5 array in it right now for data redundancy but want to maximise the longevity of the other components that will be running.

Here are my questions:

  • should I strip out all of the components that are currently drawing power such as a PCI firewire card, video card, extra USB card and even the optical drive
  • Can I "underclock" the processor - is there any point to doing this?
  • I'm thinking of doing some kind of wake up on Lan action. Does anyone have experience of this

Thanks in advance for your responses.

PS - to Aiden. I'm going to hold off on the HP Mediasmart until I've got some $$ in the bank to do it right.
