Since last weekend I own 3 Xservs and today I experimented a little with those. First i wanted to upgrade the ram. One 3.1 has 15 Gib (3x4 and 3x1). I have a lot 4gib 1066Mhz modules here from MacPro upgrades, so I replaced the 3x1 to 3x4. After that the fans maxed out. I restored the 3x1 and the fans run normally.

Even after a PRAM-Reset the fans are running on max. Is there something else to do to make it run on 24GB?

The other 3.1 has a Dual CPU and alread 12x4GB installed.

Those are leftovers, mostly from old servers I stripped or from Mac Pros I upgraded. So the RAM is working. I also see the whole 24GB on the Xserve. Only the Fans are blowing like madness.

Have you run Xserve Diagnostics to see what’s going on? I would guess the “new” RAM is missing a temperature sensor that the Xserve is expecting to find.

Hmmm that could be possible. I did not run the diagnostics, are they installed by default on the Server or on a seperate DVD like on the older consumer Macs? In last case, i did not get any DVD.... wait... I got 3 packages containging OSX Server 10.5 and 10.6. I'll have a look.

It's been a long time since I've seen an Xserve. I believe the diagnostics came on a separate disc. You'll need to do some searching to find out how to use them.

I own 3 Packages of Xserve Software, but only in the 10.4 from 2006 I found a Diagnostic DVD. In the 10.6 package from 2009, which should be from the 3.1, is only a OSX Server and AdminTool DVD.

I looked at the 2009 Xserve user guide which says this: "The Xserve comes with Apple Xserve Diagnostics software that you can use to test the Xserve hardware. For information, see the Apple Xserve Diagnostics User Guide in the Documentation folder on the Admin Tools disc."
So, maybe take a look at that and see if it's still a standalone tool or included on one of the other discs.
