I even tuned off background app refresh globally, yet it would drain my iPP 10.5 battery by 10% overnight. All latest updates. Only app with background battery drain is YouTube. My standby time is equal to usage time ever since. Did Google find another loophole in iOS or is it another iOS 11 bug?

I’ve experienced the same on my iPad Air 2.

YouTube is a battery hog on my iPhone 7 running iOS 10.3.3. Something must have changed in the app because I don't remember this happening before. I have YouTube Red which allows playback in the background. I don't know if you have Red, but maybe that's causing my problem even though I turned off background app refresh for the app.

I "solved" this by deleting the app and using the web version. Battery life is fine now.

No I don't have Youtube Red. I "solved" this by closing Youtube last night and no battery drain this morning.

This was from the other day. Background refresh was turned off entirely.

The ads are a lot more frequent now than it used to be. Many videos I watch lately have ads cut in right in the middle. I do want to support a few of the channels I subscribe to, so I let the ad play. Others that I don't care about I usually close it once an ad starts to play.

I’ve quit using the YouTube app. No matter how it is set it sucks battery life.
It wasn't an issue on ios 10..

Yup it's something with the YouTube app. I'm on iPhone 7 10.3.3. I just close it from multitasking now after I'm done using it otherwise it gets stuck in the background for some reason. YouTube will have to fix it. Glad to see I'm not the only one!

definitely something's wrong also for me !
I disabled background app refresh for YouTube and I have over 1,6hrs of background activity with just a few minutes usage in the last 24 hrs.

so the issue is present on iOS 10.3.3 ... I was under the impression it was an iOS 11 bad implementation

I have the same problem with iOS 11.0.2 on an iPad 2017 and an iPhone SE. I uninstalled it from my iPhone. Background activity is turned off and yet in the last 24 hours I had 10 of YouTube.

yeah I hope they fix this soon. For the time being just swipe it away after you are done using it. Works for me.

Swiping it away didn't make a difference on my iPhone 7 running iOS 10.3.3. Either did uninstalling and reinstalling. The only thing that worked was to delete that POS and use the website.

Same here. 8 hours background and 40% battery use for a couple of minutes watching.

Use the feedback in the app to let them know. Click your image in the top right to feedback

Weird. Works fine on my iPhone 7 10.3.3 if I force close it. You just need to wait long enough (a few hours) for the battery stats to update and you should see the background usage trickle back down to nothing. But you have to close it every time you are done using it. Otherwise it will keep getting stuck. They just need to fix it with an update and all will be fine. Just keep submitting feedback on their app.

Remember ios suspends apps after a little bit so u always gonna see some apps have background time even if it’s off

But some apps do misbehave either by accident or deliberately. Remember when Facebook would suck your battery (more than it does now) as they abused the VOIP API to keep the app alive longer than it should.
