Curious - if someone were to come across an airtag which is misplaced or perhaps in very close proximity to one but one that had not yet registered as lost, are you able to use the NFC scanner on your phone to identify the owner (if they have their info in the apple owners site)? Reason I was wondering is say for example you are in a crowded place and have say your keyring with an airtag on it or perhaps on a bag, would someone be able to possibly get contact information on you by simple bringing their phone within 20cm of it and activating the NFC scanner?

Sorry - ignore the above. Found answer here

Apparently if not registered as lost it will explain steps to remove battery.....so that would eliminate the risk of exposing personal details.

And you have to add your contact information to the Lost Mode for anyone to see.

Maybe in a future update Apple will leverage the same tech they use for email forwarding in Sign In With Apple for AirTags lost mode?

They could add a "found lost item" action in the find my app

you could open the app
hit a button
scan the found tag
it would then ping the owners phone to let the know someone found their item.

it could have the option for the finder to enter a message that would be sent to the owner with the ping.
or give both the option to open text/voice chat, without revealing actual contact info.
