Sitting here on my PDA, 640x480 on a 3.7inch screen. After watching the keynote, Steve was on about how high resolution the screen was on the iPhone. Thinkin to myself, 800x600, 1024x768? Humm, not when reading the web site... 480x320.

That is seriously crappy. Resolution of a low end PDA or smartphone. :(

480x320 isn't low-end PDA, its more like high-End PDA, Palm TX is 480x320

I'm guessing Apple will do some nice things with the iPhone, but 480x320 might not be low end Palm, but there have been VGA (640x480) Windows Mobile handhelds for several years now. I know mine is about 15 months old and it was Dell's second generation VGA entry.

The resolution is 160ppi.

160 pixels per inch, the iphone is 3.5inch across. 2"x3", thats
2x160:3x160
that is
320x480

well, u know 2"x3" will give u 3.6 inches screen size, i guess there is tiny inaccuracy there.

I thought steve said that the iPhone had the highest resolution screen ever shipped by apple... isn't the current iPods screen 160ppi also?

I guess technically it is the highest resolution ever shipped, it's just that they were already shipping one of equal resolution.

I think it's likely to be the highest res one on a phone, too? But I'm not sure about that. Are any of the WM smartphones VGA / do any of them have a higher DPI?

probably, :apple: was talking about phone, not PDA, again, PR trick, he claimed iPhone is PDA+phone+iPod, while tell u it has "highest resolution", which is apparent only true when u compare to phones... lol :p

the screen resolutions for phones i found is
palm treo, highest, 320x320
samsung, blackjack 320x240
blackberry, 8700c, 320x240

edit, im sorry, apparent, Hitachi just released cellphone with highest resolution
480x800 on 2.9 inches display. lol, but, to be honest, this Hitachi stuff isn't attractive at first glance. at all

I'll second that, what PDA has 640 on a screen under 4 inches?

The Dell Axim x51v and x50v before it are both 640x480 on 3.7", as far as I know (I have the former one). And similar products from other manufacturers of Windows Mobile devices....

Link to x51v review.

Nice little device. PDFs are gorgeous on it. It does WPA. The only real flaw is that you must use MissingSync to get it to talk to a Mac, and MissingSync is....eh.... eh. It does work, generally, though.

The iPhone's 160ppi screen has the highest resolution out of all Apple's products, and that's what Steve said in his keynote. It's really not bad at all compared to a lot of phones and PDAs in the market right now.

However, as the OP said, there are some phones and PDAs with much better screen resolution. I actually have 2 devices at home with better ppi, and both are over 220ppi. The i-mate JasJar has a 3.7" 640x480 screen, and my Sony Ericsson K800i has a 2" 320x240 screen.

What's wrong with it? You didn't try to upgrade it to WM5, did you? I heard that running WM5 on the x50 series is a disaster....
No I have tried to stay away from that mistake. Apple not allowing 3rd party apps puts it all into perspective. A lot of software, including those from large develpers seems to always screw it up in some way or another. UI on Windows Mobile is also a bit iffy.

Preinstalled software I find buggy too.

I miss being able to sync with a computer. Missing sync is too much for me being a poor student. Wish something out there for free. :(

160ppi is pretty good, as a comparison, its better than ipod 5.5G's screen res, and 5.5G has a pretty decent screen.

a simulacrum
the truth of the matter guys is that we all love the iphone cause it's an apple product, and apple knows how to make us want its products.
we are few compared to the people buying other brands' products so apple tries its best to keep us interested and make us feel special and above the "mass"
the keynote to me was childish at best
("go buy apple phone, apple phone good")
but the device itself seems promising.
lets see what refinements they do in the months from now untill release and talk about it more then :)

It's actually exactly the same as the 5.5G's (and 5G's) screen. The 5th generation ipods have a 320 x 240 2.5" screen. Do the math and you get 160ppi as-well.

indeed, so
1. highest resolution is referring to 320x480, not "160ppi"
2, highest resolution doesn't compare to other company's products.

clear? :D

hmm i wonder why steve said iphone had the best resolution yet ... if talking in terms of ppi, then that is indeed equal to vidpod, if in terms of res. macbook pros beat iphone hands down ... :S

1024x768 on a sub-4 inch screen? And what were you smoking when you were thinking this?

logic
he has a pda with 640x480 res
+Jobs say highest res
= guessing of iphone with res higher than 640x480, which is next? 800x600 or 1024x768!
hehe, actually quite reasonable.
