I know there is a rumored Apple Pencil 3 to be released about the time of the new iPad Pro models. However, I wonder if Apple Pencil 2 will be compatible with the M3 iPad Pros.

Any rumors or thoughts?

Of course the AP 2 will be compatible, they just won't have whatever new features are in the new Pencil.

What makes you so sure?

The Apple Pencil 1st gen does not work on any of the iPads that were made for the Apple Pencil 2nd gen. If you got a new iPad, you had to get a new pencil too. Sure, there are ways/hacks to get the AP1 to work with the newer iPads, but they aren't officially supported.

Also, the new M3 iPads are rumored to have a landscape camera, which would be in the way for the magnetic/wireless charging module that the AP2 uses (which is presumably why the 10th gen iPad didn't get AP2 support). We don't know how the new pencil is going to magnetically attach and charge. If it ends up getting a different style magnetic/wireless charging module, it may not be backwards compatible with the AP2. If that's the case, how are you going to pair the AP2 and keep it charged? At least with the AP1, one could still use a cable to pair and charge it if they managed to get it working with a USB-C iPad.

My initial interpretation of the announcement was that the Apple Pencil 2 would work with the new iPad Pro, but when when he indicated that it would work with the existing Apple Pencil, he must have been just referring to the USB-C version... the Tech Specs page for the new iPad Pro only says it works with the Pro and USB-C. Hard to understand why they could not have made it compatible... guess they want current iPad Pro users to have to buy a new Pencil.

Disappointing, as I just bought an AP2. If I were in a position where I had an urgent need to upgrade to a new iPad, this wouldn't stop me, but I'm in a gray area right now... current iPad Pro 11 M1 is working just fine for me, but I wouldn't be opposed to considering a new one. Having to also buy a new Pencil nudges me toward staying put.

I can’t believe the got rid of support for Apple Pencil 2. Did they get rid of Logitech Crayon support as well? This is crazy. Perfectly good Apple Pencil 2 …
