I'm only now understanding how the AirTags are able to operate without cell service by making use of other bluetooth devices on the network (such as a complete stranger's iphone).

This got me wondering if this capability existed last fall when I lost my airpods pro's. It never showed up in "Find My" because I assumed it was outside the range of my LAN.

Has this ability to use a complete strangers device on the Find My network always been around? Or is this new?

Its been around a while. Your iphone, Mac etc have been able to do this if they dont have a signal or a while.

Airpods are a bit different as they dont actually have Find my built in, they require a connection to a device, and they use the devices location.. they cant communicate with other devices on their own. I’m hoping they add proper “Tag” functionality into AirPods in the next Versions.
