I've recently updated my iPad Air (5th gen) to iPadOS 17.3, and I noticed just now that I can no longer access the iPad as an extended display. This in turn led me to investigate the Settings on the iPad and it seems that although WiFi is apparently switched on, WiFi does not seem to be working. I cannot browse the web or connect with my Mac.

I've tried rebooting the iPad but to no avail.

Any ideas, anyone?

No, it turned out to be the VPN. I was using Proton VPN while the iPad was my only device for accessing the internets. It looks like the combo of iPadOS 17.3 and Proton VPN was blocking the WiFi from connecting. As soon as I deleted Proton VPN, everything started working again!
