I have the same issue now. Just to clarify to anyone who is confused, the issue is that when you open the AirPods Pro case it causes something to break in iOS 16 and the phone becomes unresponsive for about 10 seconds. Aggressively tapping the power button eventually returns you to the Lock Screen. Apple doesn’t seem to have acknowledged this bug.

This is insane. I had this issue yesterday again on 16.3.1
Got “ping” that AirPods are paired and connected and phone was black and not responding.

I have sent to these idiots like 5 times additional data to old feedback ticket. Nobody have answered.

This issue might kill someone because you could not dial an emergency call (not tried - but well it might be hard if Siri not handle your request)

Same issue with the second gen AirPods Pro. So it must be iPhone or iOS related. Need to visit an Apple Store asap

Isn't it ironic that Apple markets themselves as offering products that will save your life, but their own smartphone can't be relied upon during an emergency. And it's not even just that, what if your phone begins a software update and in that time a medical emergency happens nearby and you don't have any other phone? You are literally screwed and that person is good as dead.

iPhone 13 Pro Max
Thanks. This means it’s for sure not a iPhone HW issue because:
I just replaced battery in Apple certified repair center on my 11Pro (no Apple Store in Poland).
No problems were found during pre repair diagnostics.
I hope this will help Apple notice this bug if this happen next time.

For sure will add this info if they could not read logs (they don’t as already they asked me if I am on beta SW when I sent them a feedback bug report about AirPods with all info added… and when never was on beta with them :) )

I've experienced this issue as well 2 or 3 times. After putting your AirPods in your ear and picking up your phone and pressing the power button (in a span of 1 -2 seconds) it freezes.

Yea. What I notice is that the screen turns back on when you put the AirPods back in the case. However, the system UI seems to restart. For example, the lock screen weather notifications appear blank, just like when you reboot your phone.

Good news partially. Had this issue once again on 16.4.1(a) with AirPods Pro gen1 latest HW.

Siri were working fine when called from AirPods. It instantly woke up the iPhone screen.

So in the end it’s not ASIL-D issue 😅 (in normal human language: no death is possible due to this issue as emergency can be called)

I’m having the same issue with 13 pro max with iOS 16.4.1 (a). Using 3rd gen AirPods. First putting the AirPods in my ears and I hear they connect. Then I pick up my phone to choose a song. The screen stays black. I suppose it has to be a UI hard crash as the screen is completely fine otherwise. I’ve only solved it by doing soft reset. Happens about 5 times out of 100.

It is a UI crash as widgets need reloading when screen comes back on.
Also you can spare the soft reset by putting AirPods back in case. Screen magically comes back on . Oh Apple.. I’m not even sure if they are aware of the bug

Just started noticing this with iOS/iPadOS 16.4. iOS 16 is absolutely horrible and seems to get worse for me with every dot release.

Confirming that my iPhone 13 Pro on 16.5.1 (c) with AirPods 3 does this exact same thing. The screen remains unresponsive and I have to wait for a few minutes or hard restart my phone in order to get the screen to turn on. The connection is fully functional otherwise (I can resume previously playing audio when clicking on the AirPod stem, but I can't make any selections with the screen off).

And this joke continues. Nobody reacted from Apple and just had it on latest iOS and watchOS 🤦‍♂️
