I've spoken to Apple support. Which wasn't really any use. I either have to take the machine to Apple shop or make a bootable flash drive. And it has to be done from a machine running either Sierra, high sierra or mojave _ which i obviously don't have hanging around.
Does the output from verbose not point to anything?

I know that in the past with a Mac Pro, the App Store wouldn't allow a fresh download of the OS if it detected an installer somewhere on the Mac. One way around this would be to install a new HD, but maybe not practical on a MacBook if already an SSD. You could check you HD for installers that may still be hanging around. Have you tried downloading a later OS from the App Store? Even if you need Yosemite, it would at least check if the issue is with the connection to the App Store.

Something just hit me. If you had Google chrome installed, you could be affected by the corrupt update bug that caused a lot of trouble around the globe. Yosemite was vulnerable since it's the last macOS / OS X without SIP. I just PMed you but wanna leave the reply here as well in case someone else might bump into the same problem.
Here is more about it, including a fix.

you could try to go into terminal first and type there

"date 111122222015" before attempting to restore with internet recovery then close terminal

this helped me when installing yosemite , although when from a usb-installer-stick.

if you can boot with safe-mode into yosemite you could make from there a new installer stick with yosemite , el capitan or sierra which is pretty easy to be done, once you are in macos. in case you need i could upload an installer which you only would need to restore to a usb and you should be ready to install osx anew.

Many many thanks to Tiesto and Pike! I've been using Yosemite on a MacPro 2,1 for a few years and just moved to El Capitan. I have an odd problem though. Everything seems to be working fine, software installs are underway, etc, BUT:

Every time I right click or option-click the Finder freezes. Other apps continue to run without trouble, so installers can complete, etc. Logging out and logging back in again fixes it, I don't need to reboot. What the heck is this?

Is this a wired or wireless mouse/keyboard - Apple or other manufacturer? Have you tried a different keyboard/mouse? This would help to pinpoint the issue being hardware or software related.

Apologies, false alarm. The very first thing I did was install Karabiner and USB Overdrive to customize my mechanical keyboard and fancy mouse, and the version of USB Overdrive I used was out of date. Dumb.

But El Cap is working! It's a bit old now and it still prevents me from updating some software I need, but maybe I can refrain from buying a new mac for another year or two...

Sounds like you have a similar set-up to me. I am also putting off buying a new Mac as long as possible while everything is working. I have a Mac Pro 1.1/2.1 and have been running El Capitan for a couple of years without any real issues.

Same setup as me (1,1), but I feel like under El Capitan, things have really started to bog down recently. I'm not quite sure what the change is, but Safari has been glacial, I'm now running unsupported versions of MS Office, etc.

Thinking about switching to an iMac. I'm all in with watch/phone/mbp/etc, so having a more up-to-date OS would be nice.

Hi guys,

it's been a while since I installed El Capitan for my nephew on my MacPro 1,1. Now the system has to be setup from scratch. I have downloaded Pike's 1.9 version, but really I seem to miss something. Could anyone provide a short step by step instruction for version 1.9 when I want to install El Capitan from my Mac Pro 3,1 (also El Capitan) directly to my my Mac Pro 1,1 via Firewire target mode? I seem to get a loop when booting in El Capitan on the Mac Pro 1,1. It always loads the installer, but cannot finish the installation. Obviously I am missing a step or did the wrong thing with Pike's 1.9 version pikiifier. I do have the original El Capitan installer on my Mac Pro 3,1 right now. Thanks!

0. Prepare a generic USB installer (without any modifications) of ElCap on the 3,1
1. Remove boot disk from the 1,1, remove disk(s) from 3,1
2. Put the 1,1 boot disk into 3,1
3. Install ElCap normally using your USB installer from 0.
4. After successful installation shut down the 3,1, put back its disks, boot back to your old 3,1 ElCap
5. Use the files from this post to swap boot.efi on your new installation to Pikeys modified 1,1 version (two locations, unlock the files before replacing, make sure you don't botch your actual 3,1 disk, lock after replacing)
6. (if you feel like updating the OS on the 1,1 in the future, honestly I wouldn't expect Apple to issue any updates) edit the installablemachines plist and add your 1,1 to it
7. Shut down the 3,1, remove the 1,1 disk, put it into 1,1, fire it up - job done.

Thanks, guys. So avoiding any security updates is a must? No re-blessing or something available? Cheers!

Hello everyone. Today I installed Yosemite on Mac Pro 1.1 (flashed to 2.1) and everything works fine except animations. Animations are somehow laggy. Here is a video witch showing problem with animations witch I also experiencing:

I'm using GeForce GT710 with Nvidia WEB Drivers, and I tried also HD5870 (witch is natively supported) but problem is same on both cards. Also I tried on all outputs (VGA, DVI, HDMI) with no differences at all. Has anyone solution for this?

Hej, you somehow ended up in the Mac Pro Forum.
You might wanna try the MacBook Pro or the Yosemite Forum instead, I think you'll get better support there.

It's because the link on OSxhackers.net for support points here for Yosemite;

I'm trying to install Yosemite onto a Macbook A1181 from 2006.
Just started trying to install and run macos extractor 1.45.
After some false starts (the instructions about setting this up miss out creating the key!)
I'm getting the below error on a high sierra macbook I'm using to do the editing of the install key I've finally gotten created using diskmaker x.

Help!

Hi folks, I need some help. Is there anybody willing to help? I have a 2007 Mac Pro >(
Nome modello: Mac Pro
Identificatore modello: MacPro1,1
Nome processore: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Velocità processore: 2,66 GHz
Numero di processori: 2
Numero totale di nuclei: 4
Cache L2 (per processore): 4 MB
Memoria: 4 GB
Velocità bus: 1,33 GHz
Versione Boot ROM: MP11.005C.B08
Version SMC (sistema): 1.7f10
OSX 10.6.8 installed.
I write from Italy, I'm 60, not young as all of you  My daughter today has gone on Distance Learning, for Covid 19 security her school has divided each class in 2 turns, they must rotate each week from distance learning to presence. She uses this mac pro but SURPRISE! to run the required softwares, she needs the osx 10.9 AT LEAST.
As I cannot afford the expense to buy a new computer and this one is SO good honestly, I went through apple support and they said it can be updated to 10.7.5. But as it needs to be at least 10.9 I've been googling to find different solutions and came to this thread. Is there anybody who can explain to me step by step and clearly if I can upgrade to yosemite from SnowLeopard? what do I need and how to do the process? Thank to all of those who will help! Lots of Love ;-)
