Only in the US. Disaster upon disaster. Covid. Fanny Mae. WTC. America just can't handle crises.

In other parts of the world, it gets brighter and brighter.
the world is becoming a worse place to live.
Especially USA under Biden - usa was always an inspiration - now its becoming more like Europe - lying and socialism.

I mean now in the US, COVID rates are falling at a good pace and the US is leading the world in vaccinations with the exceptions of UAE and Israel, while Europe and Asia is starting a third wave. A change in leadership helps.

Apple has reportedly agreed to show users a prompt when first setting up a device in Russia to pre-install government-approved apps ...
Apple has agreed to show users a "preferred" app even when searching explicitly for something else knowing an exact match exists.
Apologies for my example: when you search for WhatsApp you get TikTok.
This is not driven by government motives, but "other" motives.
As a consumer I feel "pushed" to somebody else's agenda. My autonomy is breached by entities of dubious character.

I don't know about this. This feels very 1984. And also what Apple was really breaking the mold of in 2007 when they released the iPhone. Beforehand, phones were filled with bloatware installed by the carriers.
This feels like a step backwards, but maybe not?

We get that in America too, when you set up a new iPhone they give you a list of apps if your new to the App Store: Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, TickTok, YouTube, Microsoft, Tinder, etc. all those are safe non-spying apps and companies right?

I've never been prompted to install any of those apps when setting up a new iOS device.

Maybe you should read the article again (or for the first time).

They’re willing to bend on something like this for the relatively small market in Russia. i wonder what kind of access they’re allowing the US government…. Hmmmm

Let's not kid ourselves..
Crime hasn't stopped happening.

There's a reason we haven't heard anything about "FBI & Apple and Police Departments" anytime recently.

For those that need it spelled out -- they are getting their access...quietly

Appropriate date for launch of this. Users will have the ability to decline installation of "certain" apps, which sounds like some apps will be forced to install. Not a pretty picture.

Maybe you learned a different English than I, but that means you can decide which apps to uninstall, rather than accept all or none.

That was expected. No matter how Tim Apple wants to lecture us on everything he can't deny he loves to kiss ass of evil regimes.

they could deploy a different version of maps so that dacha & church won't be visible.
fun fact: the church is shown as 'Putin's church' in maps and is 'permanently closed'

While I don’t agree with this very KGB style move I have a hard time blaming Apple for complying with a government’s laws in order to do business.
One can say that Apple should not do business because of these laws but the laws existing is the root problem. Truly, it is up to the people of Russia to fix it. It looks like it might not be a very pretty fix though.
But it could be one additional motivation for the people of Russia to start fixing it.
