Apple today said it expects iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max shipments to be lower than the company previously anticipated due to temporary COVID-19 restrictions at the primary Foxconn factory where the devices are assembled in Zhengzhou, China.

The warning was shared in a press release on the Apple Newsroom site:
COVID-19 restrictions have temporarily impacted the primary iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max assembly facility located in Zhengzhou, China. The facility is currently operating at significantly reduced capacity. As we have done throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we are prioritizing the health and safety of the workers in our supply chain.

We continue to see strong demand for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. However, we now expect lower iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max shipments than we previously anticipated and customers will experience longer wait times to receive their new products.

We are working closely with our supplier to return to normal production levels while ensuring the health and safety of every worker.
A report last week claimed that iPhone production could be reduced by as much as 30% compared to usual levels at the Foxconn factory due to the restrictions.

Apple said that the supply chain's reduced capacity will result in customers experiencing longer wait times for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max orders. The devices are currently estimated to ship in 3-4 weeks on Apple's online store in the United States.

On November 2, the Chinese government ordered a one-week lockdown for an industrial area where the Foxconn factory is situated following a COVID-19 outbreak.

This wouldn’t have been a problem if Apple had not solely relied on China. Apple had 3 years to move its assembly plant to India or other counties such as Vietnam But they didn’t take advantage of it back then. Now the demand is high and the supply is low. By the time Apple catches up with the supply. Rest assured, People will be waiting for the iPhone SE 2023 or iPhone 15 model.

So happy I Pre-ordered my iPhone 14 Pro Max. Loving it!!!

It takes years to get an assembly li w up and running. Prior to Covid there was less incentive. After Covid the difficulty increases with the incentive.

Waiting in hope that the CCP will make a change for the better is folly. Just get out of China and don’t look back.

Agreed! I honestly believe Apple took too long. They had enough time and a chance to move out. We're not about to wait 10 years for a transition over here.

Wish the prices of Apple products would just skyrocket again. Less people would buy them, there would be less supply constraints, and the devices would actually feel premium again.

Everyone having these devices ruins the premium feel of these devices, as does Apple’s lack of QA.

Apple is turning into another American Express. What was once a prestigious brand is now like any other in the industry.

Just checked store availability and it looks bleak. Delivery is 3-4 weeks with the potential to get delayed, and no store has stock anywhere nearby.

Forget about iPad 10, soon those poor value iPad would become a premium product simply because nowhere has stock. China ain’t gonna backdown their stupidity any time soon, why everyone else has to suffer alongside them?

Apple is terribly exposed to manufacturing disruptions in China. Covid is the tip of the iceberg. Wait for the coming crisis and possibly war over Taiwan. One of Tim's biggest mistakes was allowing the China exposure to worsen. He does not have much of a contingency plan. In the meantime, President Xi can virtually shut Apple down tomorrow if he wishes.

This year however is a little different. The news reported that workers at Foxccon were walking out because of being locked down in their dorms because of a COVID outbreak. Not good. Not good. Get ready for a market tear on AAPL tomorrow.
Great buying opportunity if anything. The sales will just be pushed out for the next quarter. There is never any apple demand destruction. I’ll absolutely be adding tomorrow if aapl selloff

I suspect this is the final nail in the coffin for SCM in China. I can bet you Apple is working hard behind the scenes to get out of China before the end of the decade. Its likely Tim’s one final act before he retires from Apple. He is being diplomatic about it and doing so cautiously as to not upset China. Also, a lot of the components required to assemble an iPhone are still being built there. Until the who SCM can be migrated to India and Vietnam, it will take a while. It makes sense too, China is actually becoming costly to do business not just because of the lock downs, but so many are now lifted out of poverty into middle class status. This leads to higher cost to hire workers to this kind of vocational skill. So, spreading some of that prosperity to India is indeed the right thing. Also, have a backup plan for India too. Africa has a very young population.
