Are you sure that firing is enough of a punishment? What about wiping down the floor with the offenders?
Apparently some even say that if you are unable to inflict a physical punishment on others you have a "slave mentality".

Firing is good enough. He represented the company he worked for poorly, and they no longer wished for him to represent the company. The problem has been corrected.

Insane to be fired over a stupid comic line (that was a copy of something said previously).

The thing about humour: if a statement was true or acceptable it would not be funny - exaggeration being a common element of comedy.

But yeah - fire someone for a tasteless joke(regardless of context) but ignore China, unionization in the USA, unconstitutional collaboration with NSA (PRISM)...
