Android Auto is better than Apple CarPlay for one key reason....Waze!

I like the improvements to Apple Maps, BUT it still drives me on crazy routes and tries to get me to turn right off of an interstate which would lead me to a forest with no road.

I know Apple does not like to give choices, but they do allow Waze on the iPhones so why not allow Waze on CarPlay? Let's petition Timmy!

It’s in Google’s court to develop a Waze app, not Apple’s. I don’t believe there’s a limitation preventing Google from releasing a version of Waze for CarPlay. On Android Auto, it took a while before Waze got released. I have a feeling in the next year or two, we’ll see both Google Maps and Waze on CarPlay.

Edit: Nope, it’s Apple’s fault.

Are there any map apps on Carplay and does Apple even allow them?

I was very excited and wanted a car with Carplay since it came out (my 2014 BMW 335i didn't have it). The number one reason I wanted it was for Waze. A few months ago my car was in a shop and I got a loaner that had Carplay! I was so excited. I spent half an hour in the parking lot trying to get Waze onto the Carplay screen before I found out it is not supported.

After that, I spent two more days with Carplay and I have to say I was extremely disappointed. I have a phone holder in my CD player so my phone is right below my car display. I use it for Waze (always drive with it, even on my normal commute), and listening to music or podcasts. Don't really see the point of Carplay as it is now.

So I agree, Apple needs to allow Waze and other mapping options onto Carplay. This may be a contract limitation from the auto industry as well who wants to up-sell their expensive navigation systems.

It's actually not, Carplay doesn't have a fully featured dev environment. You can't make a Map app, or really another but an audio app for Carplay from a developer standpoint. As a carplay app you can only supply lists of items and tabs and... that's about it. You can't render anything yourself, it's all passed off to Carplay.

Agree. Would like to see Waze on CarPlay. Much better than apple maps.

I would like this too but I really don't think it's gonna happen. I think there are several strategic reasons why Apple and Google don't want each other's maps on their versions of the infotainment software. Car tech is the next battlefield for these two companies. They are going to lock down and compete hard.

Yep, looks like it’s completely closed off for 3rd parties. Must have misread a previous article. This whole time I believed Google was the culprit, doesn’t surprise me that Apple is behind this nonsense.

This is why Apple needs to hear us on this issue. I know Apple knows what is best for us! haha For me, this would give me another reason to stick with the IPhone. Right now it is a negative for getting the iPhone versus and Android phone.

Apple would need to completely open the floodgates for an app like Waze to work without severe limitations.

Its been a very long time since I used Waze but unless a passenger was using it (to its fullest extent) Apple really does know whats best for us. The thought of people playing Waze (playing is the verb of choice here) as they drive down the road is somewhat terrifying.

Now I'm not knocking the app because its great and it saved me from getting a ticket on more than one occasion AND it may have changed since I used it last but it was set up as an interactive game for the driver of a vehicle last time I used it. I deleted it because I wanted that high score but recognized the danger involved.

I sound like "that guy" so I apologize in advanced. I'll be in the slow lane with my hazards on if anyone needs me.

While I understand everyone uses things for different reasons, the primary goal of Waze is to get you to a location with as little traffic as possible, in the shortest amount of time. Gaming, while necessary to Waze’s existence, is not what most users do when using the app.

Apple Maps cannot compete with Waze’s routing, and for that, Apple should allow 3rd parties onto their platform. A completely locked off platform is never a good thing and CarPlay is a shining example of this.

Also, Waze was recently updated to allow voice input for traffic / police updated, making it much safer for input.

First I like to mention I'm not trying to argue with you just a friendly debate. And I'm glad to hear they offer voice controls traffic concerns. Second I have no problem with Apple implementing a safe way of using Waze. It would be selfish of me not to want it there just because I don't use it.

Waze uses Google Data with their own user base information on top. Reality is when it comes to real time road conditions Waze is unbeatable or should be in theory. Nothing is 100% perfect 100% of the time.

I can't find much information on it, and I'm sure the majority of the Waze users don't participate in the distractions caused by the app while driving however a large number of people do. Merely looking at people that allow you to see them on the map shows that info really quickly. And I would guess most people don't allow you to see them. I don't know if the statistic was BS or not but remember when using a phone was more dangerous then drinking and driving? If there were as many drunks on the road as top tier Waze users it would be a demolition derby out there (I don't know, maybe there are).

EDIT: I've been trying for about an hour to formulate a good argument for Apple Maps but when comparing only driving directions (CarPlay) it pointless for me to even try since I'm comparing to a company that gets data from another company that is very proactive about road data and then use their own lay of information from a very proactive user base.

However for me personally traffic congestion and navigation in general has put Apple Maps on par with google maps. Admittedly I have a bias because Google and Waze insist I drive through the center of the city, passed 2 national league sports stadiums and a casino. Its a nightmare regardless of time and if there is an event, forget about park your car and leave it. This has made them nearly useless if I can't preplan the route because I'm already driving for example. And frankly I have to question how good their navigation and incident avoidance really is. While Apple Maps always goes around the city using highways specifically built to go around it. But that is just a statistic of one and will vary between person and their location. Regardless they have all burned me one time or another.

However that is where the comparison ends for me. Since this is specifically about CarPlay this is off topic but the other functions of Apple Maps make it shine. Destination times and predictions before opening maps, indoor maps, Siri control, public transport, parked car location, etc etc (admittedly I still use Googles street view for find exact addresses, buildings, parking garages etc.

While I agree Apple should allow Waze if its better I still feel it would lose most of its functionality that makes it as powerful as it is due to Apples more recent attempt to keep people off their phones while driving. And I still feel its potentially hazardous more than other navigation services due to its very nature of what makes it so good (in the wrong hands of course). They could probably figure it out, with massive amounts of Siri integration, for example "Hey Siri mark in waze there is a cop running radar here, or accident here, etc". However that is time and effort that could be devoted into making Apple Maps better.

Personally if I drove as much as I do and insisted on Waze, I would just buy a 30 dollar Android phone (assuming your car isn't exclusively CarPlay) and download the Waze app. Just leave the phone in the car as a dedicated Waze GPS.

I'm all for doing whatever it takes to get Waze on CarPlay. It's been disappointing to me that CarPlay limits what you can have on the screen. Waze is a great app for traffic and other hazards on the road.

My experience has been quite different with most of what you said about Waze and Apple Maps, so I’ll let the dogs sleep.

On a side note, the $30 Android phone is only viable if you attach it to a data plan, otherwise you don’t get traffic avoidance. That’s no longer a $30 solution. Attaching it to a personal hotspot is annoying, I know this because I use a custom Android radio for my car and I stopped using it for GPS because it became a pain to connect to my iPhone hotspot. It was easier mount my iPhone and call it a day.

I just hope Apple allows both Google Maps and Waze into CarPlay. If that does not happen I will be seriously considering getting an Android when I get a new phone sometime next year.

My aggravation is having what’s on the car screen mirror what’s on the phone. Why can’t two different things be shown at once?

Apple is letting us down with all this, I've read tons of comments and petitions begging for Waze on Carplay and they don't listen...

If only they had a decent map solution but don't! At Central America, Apple Maps does not work at all.
Also they didn't add anything new to Carplay this year, it seems like it's a forgot platform for Apple. This really piss me off.

Just bought a car with car play. Tried to give Apple maps a chance here in Southern California but it’s definitely no Waze. Unfortunately this means I won’t be using CarPlay.

I have the same problem in France. I paid € 200 to have Apple carplay on my new car! With the navigation system of my iphone, I lost myself in the middle of the vineyards. I had to put Waze to find me. The horror ! If Apple does not accept Waze, I think I lost my money!

This also happened to me last summer using Apple maps... I got redirected, because of traffic, to a side-road which is under construction. This is one reason I want Waze on CarPlay... It appears to be more adaptive to prevailing traffic conditions.

Apple does not have our best interest in mind. I’m not sure if anybody noticed, but with the release of iOS11, only apple applications were allowed to open via Siri when connected to CarPlay. This had to do with “do not disturb while driving” segment. It initially blocked Siri from opening apps like amazon music which were on CarPlay. It doesn’t allow apps like Waze to be opened via Siri when connected to CarPlay. Now a person must touch the phone to open Waze. How is that safer than using Siri to open the app? So now I just control using my iphone for Waze and stream music via Bluetooth. “Do not disturb while driving” is disabled, so I can use the full functionality of Siri if needed.

Pulling this apart a bit, there's rendering the actual on-screen map, feeding the map with points of interest data, and providing navigation routes. Let's say Apple's GUI is a non-negotiable, and they already do allow third-party POI from Yelp and OpenTable, so that could be opened to other location-aware apps. If they'd only allow Waze to feed the navigation "logic" to the Apple map screen, it'd be quite a bit better (imagine "Navigation Powered by Waze"). We wouldn't be able to interact or report things but at least we'd have better crowd-sourced real-time information (one could argue, from the Waze side, that the full interactive experience is what makes Waze Waze). Although I have no clue if it's even possible to feed navigation to Apple Maps, the idea of opening up the "navigation route API" to third-parties is intriguing (who knows which app would be first to provide back-end navigation logic to the CarPlay front-end?). Oh well, just a thought...
