While I understand everyone uses things for different reasons, the primary goal of Waze is to get you to a location with as little traffic as possible, in the shortest amount of time. Gaming, while necessary to Waze’s existence, is not what most users do when using the app.
Apple Maps cannot compete with Waze’s routing, and for that, Apple should allow 3rd parties onto their platform. A completely locked off platform is never a good thing and CarPlay is a shining example of this.
Also, Waze was recently updated to allow voice input for traffic / police updated, making it much safer for input.
First I like to mention I'm not trying to argue with you just a friendly debate. And I'm glad to hear they offer voice controls traffic concerns. Second I have no problem with Apple implementing a safe way of using Waze. It would be selfish of me not to want it there just because I don't use it.
Waze uses Google Data with their own user base information on top. Reality is when it comes to real time road conditions Waze is unbeatable or should be in theory. Nothing is 100% perfect 100% of the time.
I can't find much information on it, and I'm sure the majority of the Waze users don't participate in the distractions caused by the app while driving however a large number of people do. Merely looking at people that allow you to see them on the map shows that info really quickly. And I would guess most people don't allow you to see them. I don't know if the statistic was BS or not but remember when using a phone was more dangerous then drinking and driving? If there were as many drunks on the road as top tier Waze users it would be a demolition derby out there (I don't know, maybe there are).
EDIT: I've been trying for about an hour to formulate a good argument for Apple Maps but when comparing only driving directions (CarPlay) it pointless for me to even try since I'm comparing to a company that gets data from another company that is very proactive about road data and then use their own lay of information from a very proactive user base.
However for me personally traffic congestion and navigation in general has put Apple Maps on par with google maps. Admittedly I have a bias because Google and Waze insist I drive through the center of the city, passed 2 national league sports stadiums and a casino. Its a nightmare regardless of time and if there is an event, forget about park your car and leave it. This has made them nearly useless if I can't preplan the route because I'm already driving for example. And frankly I have to question how good their navigation and incident avoidance really is. While Apple Maps always goes around the city using highways specifically built to go around it. But that is just a statistic of one and will vary between person and their location. Regardless they have all burned me one time or another.
However that is where the comparison ends for me. Since this is specifically about CarPlay this is off topic but the other functions of Apple Maps make it shine. Destination times and predictions before opening maps, indoor maps, Siri control, public transport, parked car location, etc etc (admittedly I still use Googles street view for find exact addresses, buildings, parking garages etc.
While I agree Apple should allow Waze if its better I still feel it would lose most of its functionality that makes it as powerful as it is due to Apples more recent attempt to keep people off their phones while driving. And I still feel its potentially hazardous more than other navigation services due to its very nature of what makes it so good (in the wrong hands of course). They could probably figure it out, with massive amounts of Siri integration, for example "Hey Siri mark in waze there is a cop running radar here, or accident here, etc". However that is time and effort that could be devoted into making Apple Maps better.
Personally if I drove as much as I do and insisted on Waze, I would just buy a 30 dollar Android phone (assuming your car isn't exclusively CarPlay) and download the Waze app. Just leave the phone in the car as a dedicated Waze GPS.
