. do they activate/get signal/picture when the login screen shows, or is it blank until after login?

The screen stays black... Even, when I log in blind, the screen is not initialized and stays black. I can only get past the black screen, when I unplug the TB3 cable from the Blackmagic eGPU and plug it back in. Then the screen will initialize and everything is fine.

The whole 10.15.4 update process has been… weird. With a few 60” or so pauses where the Mac seemed to be dead, only to reboot on itself. At least once it remained turned off for minutes and I had to power it in on by myself.

Having said that, I’ve managed to restart once with both my displays attached to the eGPU.
On the next attempt it took longer than expected to turn off, with the dock remaining on the display for more than usual.
When it turned on the Mac was again dead. By dead I mean the white led was on, but after more than two minutes I still wasn’t able to ping its Ethernet port.

Crapalina is still Crapalina.

Next time you shutdown, try unplugging it from power for a minute, to reset the SMC

I updated to Catalina 10.15.4 (final) yesterday. The Boot Rom version changed again (1037.100.359.0.0 (iBridge: 17.16.14263.0.0,0)), but the behavior (black screens during boot/reboot) for my setup (Mac Mini 2018 / Blackmagic eGPU (RX580) / LG 5k) did *not* change/improve (in my case).

Mac mini late 2018
Razer Core X
AMD RX 5700

All new for Catalina!

On Mojave all runs smooth.
Since Catalina, black screens.
After 10 Seconds the Mac stops loading from an ext. SSD and from the internal.

Different cabels, ports, ssd‘s etc ....
NVRAM & SMC resets ...
Every single problem send to Apple.
After nearly 5 months i give up.
After 17 yaers, i will leave Apple.
New features, new features, new features ... but old BIG problems still exists!

i‘ve done!

Mac mini i7 256gb with rx580 and last patch .04 work fine without any black/white screen.
The problem return only if I go to boot camp and return to Osx

10.15.4 works fine with my Vega 64, but only if my second monitor is still connected to the integrated HDMI on the Mac mini.
Same (kinda) for me.

If the HDMI dummy plug is plugged into the Mini I can boot and the RX580 powers my display.

But...

When I tested this in Heaven it was clear that the GPU wasn’t being used until I unplugged the HDMI dummy. Then my FPS went from 3 to 30.

This is with the i7 2018 Mini with Akitio Node and RX580.

Rebooting without the dummy plug just gives me a black screen.

so based on the length of this thread, is the tldr that 10.15.4 still can't boot properly with an egpu connected?

my system started hanging on login if i had my razer core x / vega 64 connected starting with 10.15.3 and continues with 10.15.4.

its really frustrating especially now that working from home is common, and the generally garbage nature of catalina seems to require reboots almost daily.

My experience (with Sonnet Enclosure + Vega64) has been made even worse by the Boot ROM that came with 10.15.4. In my older quoted post, I described how a cold boot with eGPU connected usually worked fine after a few tries. Now that never works.

It feels like the Apple engineers are randomly tweaking the code and hoping for the best. They need a talking to from Federighi. This has gone on for MONTHS

On a cold boot or reboot, my screen is activated but is simply a permanent all-black image. I have to forcibly shut down the Mini by holding down its power button and then turn it back on to try again.

After doing that dance maybe 3 or 4 times, the all-black image still happens, but instead of being permanent, goes away after about a minute, at which point the white loading bar shows and the OS boots.

I just upgraded to the latest Mojave and then to the latest Catalina and the above situation happens exactly the same with both. FWIW I've never used FileVault on this Mini.

Kind of hard to believe this issue would be 1 year old in 2 mouths. WWDC 2020 is on the corner.

I updated to Catalina 10.15.4 supplemental update. The Boot Rom version changed again (1037.100.362.0.0 (iBridge: 17.16.14281.0.0,0)), but the behavior (black screens during boot/reboot) for my setup (Mac Mini 2018 / Blackmagic eGPU (RX580) / LG 5k) did again *not* change/improve (in my case).

AMD RX 5700
BenQ 4K Display (DP or HDMI)

Same problems since 6 months!
This is ridiculous Apple! (the new - old Microsoft)

I updated to Catalina 10.15.5 public beta 1. The Boot Rom version changed again (1037.120.55.0.0 (iBridge: 17.16.15264.5.3,0)), but the behavior (black screens during boot/reboot) for my setup (Mac Mini 2018 / Blackmagic eGPU (RX580) / LG 5k) did again *not* improve (in my case).
Actually with this beta I have a black screen boot rate of about 80%, where before it was more like 50%. Feels like it got worse...

So, finally, with the latest public beta my Mac mini (late 2018) still running again very smooth with my Razer Core X and AMD Radeon RX 5700!
After nearly 20 restarts (power off's, reboots etc ..), my Mini works without any single boot-problem again!
And - the Geekbench Scores are very high again!
Boot time: 30 seconds - was about over one minute before. (ext. SSD)
I'm speechless! ?
After 7 months Apple has fixed this BIG BIG ISSUE (maybe) for all eGPU Users!?

The Music and Photos App still have some big problems - and Windows can't run the Razer Core X - still have the RC12 issue. (ok that's a Microsoft problem)

Fingers crossed! Hope this eGPU problem is gone now!

Sounds promising! Any boot screen support? Still missing that since it was removed in 10.15.2.
