The 2010 issue can be solved by replacing a tantalum capacitor in the GPU area. I fixed it a long ago and it's now owned by a friend and works perfectly, an external monitor can also be connected too. The 2011 could only be worked around by the procedure suggested here (removing the X3000 driver), but it only worked for a few years and now it wouldn't show anything on screen at all and it's basically dead. The GPU went under reflowing at some point, but it only held for a few years and I assume the GPU is now dead so I can't even boot and hack it as before.

Thank you for this thread and fixes. It seems to be working here. What I would like to ask is how to perform a similar fix when running bootcamp in this same MBP Pro mid 2010?

Cheers

For that I think the only way is to get a hardware fix. In fact I've never heard of anyone using this with Windows. I might have missed something on this thread about it, but I read almost everything here and never saw anything Windows related.

On what page is the latest or best software patch or fix? Is the first page a wiki yet? I got me one of these 2010s and now I also need the fix since I don’t have the tools to do the hardware fix

Any software-only "fix" won't really fix it. You'll have to have a tech replace the tantalum capacitor near the GPU as a permanent fix.

I have Windows 10 running on my MBP mid 2010 (MacBookPro6,2) since March 2019 and it's working fine. I never needed to apply any fix because I deleted the 'NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M' driver from the Boot Camp installer files before installing Boot Camp. I had to do this as my computer would crash instantly when Boot Camp attempted to install the NVIDIA driver. Windows 10 is more stable than when I had Windows 7 installed with the NVIDIA driver. The issues I had in Windows 7 was about 30% of the time when booting into Windows it would either hang at a black screen or Windows would load but not display anything forcing me to hard reboot the computer. I never have this issue at all in Windows 10 with removing the NVIDIA driver from Boot Camp.

Hi iamdannywyatt
I tested it here and it is working. I don't really know why you're not.
Changing the capacitor is the best way. Low cost and the problem is solved, allowing the use of an external monitor.
One tip is to completely disable the gpu dedicated by NVRAM.

Hi fabioroberto, do you or does anyone know how to undo the changes made with 'MacBook Pro dGPU Disabler.app'? I applied the change and now can't use Teams or Skype for video calls unless I reboot into Windows 10 and run it from there. I didn't run the nvram command, mentioned here, before installing this, but I think this is just for disabling the GPU at boot? I did make a backup of 'ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext' and 'AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext' before the change, do I just restore those files? It would make sense to be able to undo the changes with 'MacBook Pro dGPU Disabler.app' before replacing the capacitor as a permanent solution.

UPDATE 2020-08-16: After hours of troubleshooting I was able to restore my dedicated NVIDIA GPU as it was before running 'MacBook Pro dGPU Disabler.app'. If anyone is interested I can give detailed steps on what I did to restore it. But basically I had to restore my *.kext folders, restore my NVIDIA drivers that were hidden on the root of my drive back to /System/Library/Extensions/, and finally go into Single User mode and run the commands fabioroberto mentioned in this post.

Hi guys. Another MBP saved. Software solution didn't worked for me sice I needed external screen. So decided to go for hardware solution. I've used ceramic capacitor to replace tantalum one. It was done by very nice lady in PCB Liverpool. She used soldering iron instead of heathgun so everything was in a save manner. Her only concern was that the original cap has polarity and ceramic doesn't, but it all works well and Im happily using my external monitor now.
If any of you needs this capacitor I bough bulk at Mouser and selling it on eBay:

Hi Mike, to see if this is the issue try one of this software solutions (Gfx Status, Fabio app, Julian way or there was someone posting bash commands to do that) if they work for you its defo that capacitor.
PCB Soldering is in Netherton 52-54 Farriers Way Industrial Estate L30 4XL. Forgot this lady name but she is the lead phd engineer. I only took the logic board in there and they charged me 25 quid. It was ready next day. Since a covid outbreak you have to call in advance and book a time slot for yourself.
Hope this helps.

So far Fabio’s fix as really helped but would love to know if there is somewhere reputable in London where i can bring my 2010 mbp to get this permanently resolved at a reasonable price.

No. MBP 2011 has not capacitor problem. The gpu failure is a different problem.
For 2010 model, c9560 capacitor is 330uF.
Good Morning fabioroberto, I am having the same issue. I have a MacBook Pro 17" 2010. It has NVIDIA 330M. It suffers from Kernel panics. Most of the time it shuts down before I can boot into the OS. When it does boot, opening Chrome or watching a Youtube video will cause it to crash.

I have the 820-2849-A model.
Is it fine to Replace both c9510 and c9560 to 330uf 2v?

Hi all,

I think I/my friend damaged the 'big' 2R2 inductor coil right next to the capacitor when using a heat gun to remove the faulty capacitor.

Can anyone link to a replacement that would be suitable (and available in the UK), please?

Thank you!

Ed

Where can you find this capacitor?

Also, does it have to be a specific size?

This problem doesn't affect this 17" model. If you are having this issue, it is likely something else.

What do you think is causing it? I took it to a local repair store and they said it was a logic board issue. Do you know what could cause this issue in 17 inch machines of this year?

Yes. Could you try a script fix? Here is a link to my forum:

I am running MacOS High Sierra.

Had the same issues with my 15-inch Mid 2010 machine. The repair extension program had since expired and because the machine had entered vintage status, replacement parts were no longer available.

I'd already bought soldering tools to repair a Mid 2009 MacBook Pro, so I decided to have a shot at changing the troubled capacitor. Problem solved. Not the easiest repair in the world but it would be a straightforward job for an electronics repairer or anyone skilled with a soldering iron.

This would be the better solution for anyone that isn't content with a temporary software fix, boots between multiple operating systems or needs the use of the higher powered graphics hardware.

I know this is an old post, but, could you fix it changing the capacitor? Can you give me some advice? I have a logicboard 820-2915-B Macbook Pro 8,2 late 2011 with Radeon. I read a lot and dont want to give up, as it is in very good shape... the only problem is the screen glitches sometimes, someother time blue screen, black screen... now it is working with linux and the nvram variables... but I feel it will fail soon again.

Thanks!

Disable SIP.
Run the MBP Mid 2010 GPU Fix utility program;

Open terminal and type:
sudo bash
<enter password>
chown -R root:wheel /S*/L*/E*
chmod -R 755 /S*/L*/E*
kextcache -system-caches
kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel

Reboot
Does the SIP get reenabled once the patch is run ?

also, I notice that if I apply new security updates, it seems to remove the patch - is this normal?

Is it possible for a swollen battery to cause GPU panics...?

uhh yes, but will more likely just kill your computer.
my 2010 battery just died, but works with the magsafe power cable
still has GPU crash,
so if anyone wants an old 2010 15" for super cheap, lemme know haha (what are they worth?)

I have this system and the same problem. The only thing that has worked is to download the gfxCardStatus app at the link below.

https://gfx.io/

When you reboot your system select 'Integrated Only' to ensure that your discrete (Nvidia) graphics card does not get used. This should resolve the panics.

Note that you may need to adjust the settings in apps like your browser to ensure they don't have an option selected to use your discrete graphics (hardware acceleration or something similarly titled). If the option is selected it can override the gfxCardStatus setting.

This could slow down applications that are graphics intensive, but it is better than having the frequent reboots.
I confirm this answer, I have the same problem, download gfxcardstatus v2.5, the integrated graphics card needs to be selected, every time the laptop is closed gfxcardstatus starts automatically and they must select the integrated graphics card again, if you use google chrome as a browser , It is very likely that it will not leave you because google chrome helper (gpu) is working, you will have to go to the activity monitor, search for google chrome helper and close all its processes, the browser will probably close, it will let you select the integrated graphics card and Ready you will not have the panic kernel for the duration of that session.

To have a diagnosis about what causes the problem in the hardware download gpupanic https://github.com/fabioiop/MBP-2010-GPU-Panic-fix/releases, I got problem in capacitor c9560, as investigated when the graphics card It requires more power, the energy passes through this capacitor and if it does not work it is what causes the panic kernel gpu, for 2008-2009 models the capacitor is the c7771, with this the repair will not be so expensive, I hope it will help you.

hey fabio, I think I should go ahead and tryout your technique to resolve my problem here, but I can't find the installation process, I request you to please make the GitHub readme much understandable with step by step installation process and instructions, so that it may help others in a much better way.

for now please direct me to the installation process with any links or so here.
best regards
