Yes, formerly I had those all the time.

Another one has been: Failed Power Play Resume. Shutting Back Down.
After that in kernel backtrace you could observe apple graphics drivers families and some IO extensions too.
Or another one was "userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from com.apple.logd in 120 seconds"

What's your configurations? GPU version?

Now that I don't let my 6,1 D300 sleep at all, it's been solid and steady with 6800XT eGPU, running something like 2-3 weeks all days and nights as my working machine. One monitor is attached to eGPU and one monitor to D300.

I just recently needed to shut it down because I was on the road for 4 days. But it had been up like 20 days or so without any problems or crashes.

Formerly, with sleep in regular use, I barely had it running for something like 4-5 days or so. Sometimes it crashed by itself all alone a few times in a night. Now that was a weird and unpleasant feeling reading that log.

I read another post that said the something about the attached items that may be tripping the Kernal Panic as well; I will turn sleep mode off and see the outcome this week. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Heres my set up as well

Mac Pro 6,1 3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5, 64 GB 1866 MHz DDR3, MD FirePro D300 2048 MB

Exactly the same combo here, just with an eGPU.
Please do report your findings afterwards.

There is a good chance my Mac would sleep more gracefully after a fresh RTC battery swap (suggested by tsialex). I haven't had time for that yet. And it is quite a teadious task so maybe not gonna do it today or this week either.

Mine's doing this every day, and I have sleep disabled. Suspected a dodgy USB hub, removed that and it's still crashing.

I've got some BR2032 batteries on order, will see if that fixes it.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Mine had a fresh install of Big Sur when I bought it and it's been happening since day 1.

I have a hunch, because I got this kind of Kernel Panic yesterday while booting my Mac Pro 7,1 multiple times in a row. It stopped after I switched my old display back to SST operation, limiting it to 4k30p.

Do you guys use one of the early 4K displays?

Many early 4K displays use Multi-Stream Transport (MST) to achieve 4k @ 60Hz. Because Thunderbolt has a maximum of only two streams of video you can run into strange problems. Try changing the refresh rate to 30Hz and change monitor setting MST to SST.
Sharp PN-K321: Choose Menu > Setup > DisplayPort STREAM > MST > Disable
ASUS PQ321Q: Choose OSD menu > Setup > DisplayPort Stream >Disable
Dell UP2414Q and UP3214Q: Choose Menu > Display Setting > DisplayPort 1.2 > DIsable
Panasonic TC-L65WT600: Choose Menu > Display Port Settings > Stream Setting > Disable

I am actually. Dell P4317Q.

I could never use 30Hz on a daily basis, but will try and see if that fixes it.

If I remember correctly, this looks exactly like mine did - at least one KP per day.
The culprit was the smbfs in Big Sur (Samba mounted network drives from Windows 7 and 10 servers).
Switched to AFP and never had a KP again.
Sleeping each night and running for weeks without a reboot.
Battery is the original from early 2014.
Surprisingly you are the first one with the same KP.

Any idea if Monterey has fixed this?

I'm pretty sure this is exactly my problem. Removed my Windows Server share and it's been stable ever since.

Great to hear, but totally surprising that there aren’t more people having this issue as it seems like a very common usecase.
As this shows, even Big Sur has still heavy bugs so I am far away from updating to Monterey.
But if you do, please report back or/and send the crashlogs to Apple. It‘s a shame this hasn‘t been fixed in a year of updates in Big Sur.

Just had couple of those this week, but not at reboot. They just happened suddenly. Another one was that the system decided to shutdown and reboot by itself, the other one was a hang, and I had to force shutdown by myself.
They were the most usual windowserver stuck and not answering for 120 seconds, and then watchdogd reacts to that. I have reported all those to Apple so they should know.

Pretty annoying. I have had good uptimes earlier, like over 3 weeks, maybe a whole month I think. I am now on Big Sur 11.5.1 on purpose (6,1 D300). My other 6,1 is more updated though, let's say for comparison reasons (6,1 D500). It might not be a good comparison because of the D300/D500 difference though.

I did not follow all of this advice above, I don't have those things installed mentioned in the posts you quoted from another forum/blog/social media platform?

Did a completely clean install of Monterey, added my SMB share and it crashed again overnight.

Have removed the share to test, will report back.

If it stays up I will look into compiling SMB manually, but this is a massive pain - I shouldn't have to find such work arounds with a modern operating system.

Also I think Apple releasing a new OS each year is absolutely ridiculous. We're at a point now where bugs are never fixed.

The watchdog is a process that detects hard hangs. Basically if the watchdog isn't poked by the windowserver (the process that draws the UI) it thinks the mac is dead and reboots your mac.

The question is, what happened right before this? The implication is that the UI had been locked up for a bit more than 2 minutes.

It could be a bad cable, a problem coming out of sleep, bad VRAM. But basically something caused the UI to hang, which caused your mac to KP.

Not sure if this helps much.

Well I stopped using SMB, now it's crashing from my audio interface driver (RME Babyface Pro).

Think I will change the battery and try my luck. If that doesn't help, I'm rolling back to Mojave and will install a later OS in a few years time.

Ended up going back to Big Sur. Persistent SMB share reinstated. So far so good.

I realised that on my previous Big Sur installation, the machine only panicked at night when I left it turned on, but with the monitor turned off. I have a theory that if I don't turn the monitor off it won't kernel panic. Will test this theory for a while, and also try leaving it on at night with the monitor disconnected.

Monitor is a Dell P4317Q connected by a DP cable with a DP to TB2 adapter.

A new RTC battery (BR2032) is in the mail, once that's installed I'll try my luck with auto sleep at night, with monitor going into standby.

Hey,

has the new battery helped with the panic since?

Hey,

has the new battery helped with the panic since?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I highly doubt the battery will make any difference, because I literally just installed a fresh/brand new Panasonic BR2032 into my machine on Monday 12/27, along with doing a fresh install of Big Sur 11.6.2 and now I just got this same KP on my cMP...

For me, what seems to have fixed it (thus far), is removing my Sapphire Pulse RX-5700XT and putting my trusty old RX-580 back in its place. Since the swap I have not had any KPs yet, but am monitoring to make sure that it is indeed the GPU (suspected culprit).

After doing some research into this, it looks like Mac AMD drivers for Navi GPUs are all over the place, eh...

*shrug* This is really wierd, but I will keep you guys posted and see if my GPU swap fixes this for me (on a 5,1 cMP).

edit: day 2 with RX-580 and still going strong, so I suspect (for me at least) the issue was in fact my RX-5700XT, which I am now working to get replaced.

On a new M1 Max running Monterey 12.1, I was having reproducible kernel panics of this type when using Chronosync to sync files to a SMB share and leaving the machine long enough for the display to turn off. This happened even when no external peripherals were attached. After the display turned off, the UI would become extremely slow if I started using the machine again, and if I left it alone for 15-30 minutes (and allowed the screen to turn off), it would kernel panic and reboot. I switched from SMB to AFP, and this behavior seems to have stopped.

The SMB theory is interesting... I've had KPs for a while now every couple of days and the log always points to Watchdogd. I'm using Monterey here with an M1 Mac Mini... In my case I use it headless and I prevent it sleeping as I use it as a server. Indeed, the log refers to SMB (why didn't I notice that before!!??) as the last started kext:

com.apple.filesystems.smbfs

Good work y'all!

Hi seems that I have been having similar problems for two months. First with Big Sur, then upgraded to Monterey, tried replacing logic board and clean re-installed Mac OS, SMB sharing is off, but the problem persists. This is an error message I usually see, but there are variations. Any idea what the problem may be? Thanks a lot!

Was SMB always off? Do you have external hard drives connected? If so, how many? What kind and what are the connections?
