You mean newer apps won't run, right?

Because I've got an iPhone 4 on iOS 7.1.2 and it still runs apps. They didn't just suddenly stop working because iOS 7 is old and unsigned. Same with my 6s+ on 9.0.2.
Some apps stop working, too (e.g. finance).

Kept my iPhone 4 on iOS 5 for Stanza after I updated to the iPhone 5. The app behaves quite wonky on iOS 6. :p

App support dies out
New apps won’t even work
Outdated security
No compatibility with modern accessories

How is that the best way to stop a device becoming obsolete again? I’d rather things be a bit slower then not working at all.
