When I play 4K HDR content on the Iphone 11 Pro from the Amazon Prime Video app its only HD. Should it not be HDR? Also how do you tell a Itunes movie in 4K is playing in 4K on the Iphone 11 Pro?

amazon only does HD on the iphone. And no HDR from what I can tell(i'll double check at home on my wifi).

It looks like netflix does but unlike my tv there's no pop up indicating it's in HDR. But it looks like it is.

In either case I don't see a difference between HD and 4k from either. Screen is just too small for that and both look really good. It's HDR that's the game changer.

I had a Iphone 11 Pro at launch. I swear it played HDR on the Amazon app. And now it does not on a new Iphone 11 Pro I bought yesterday. I dont have Netflix to check HDR. I asked Apple support and they gave me the old we need and IOS update or that app does. I wonder if anyone has seen HDR on the Netflix app since launch. I can see a difference in 4K and HDR.

I don’t think any of those apps work properly. I’ve tested using a 4K HDR rip I have on my plex server and it correctly played the HDR version.

I also noticed the Reddit app looks stretch with viewing pictures posted. Anyone else?

Plex won't play HDR on the iphone. Just tried. It transcodes the video and drops the HDR. Perhaps infuse will do it.

Wasn’t doing that for me, it was playing the HDR file. I’ll check again when I get home. I have 2 files, a 1080P SDR and 4K HDR and it always picked the 4K HDR.

The file plays. It's just not in HDR. I tried 3 different movies.
I'm at work over a cell connection. Maybe it would be different on my home wifi but I doubt it. I can test that later.

I wonder if we can try this out with content from iTunes library directly.

Vudu app does not allow HDR either and I remember it was a few weeks ago before this update.

I can tell by looking at it. I've had a 4k OLED TV for 3 years so i'm familiar with HDR and non-HDR content.

Ah I see.

OMG just tried the trailer of Godzilla for the first time on the 11 Pro. That spatial audio is A class. I didn’t realise how awesome it looks and sounds on the phone.

Looks like I’m gonna consume way more movies from Apple from now on!

You're right. Just checked. 4k/HDR is not working on vudu.
I think something is off on this last update. I am watching Aquaman on Itunes and it does not look 4K HDR. I can tell also by the bars on the sides. I wish I had a Netflix account to check HDR. I am 99.9% sure Amazon App should play in 4K HDR for certain shows and movies.

I will also check 4K on FuboTv for the NFL game tonight. I know that worked in 4K on the Iphone and you could really tell the difference from the 720P stream on FuboTV a couple weeks ago.

The bars don't matter.

The shows/movies on Amazon that are in 4k/HDR do play that way on my ATV4k. Just not on my phone. I may be getting throttled on amazon by my provider right now however I watched carnival row on it on wifi this past weekend and it was not in 4k. It's possible it may have been in HDR(4k is not a requirement for HDR). I can test that again when I get home.

Looks like HDR is working on plex. I don’t see it mentioning it anywhere, but it’s a 4K HDR file and when I played the 1080 SDR version it looked noticeably different in terms of colors/contrast.

I just got home and tested plex and HDR does work on my local network. Just not remotely.

Also tested amazon again at home, definately not 4k/HDR.

I’m gonna assume the bandwidth isn’t high enough for remote HDR playback. My 4K files are 40-90mbit/s heh. It might also be a limitation of plex itself though.

YouTube still hasn’t added HDR support for the iPhone 11 series. I’m surprised that more people aren’t talking about it given the 1200 nits peak HDR brightness is a selling point for the Pros. I wanted to do a side-by-side comparison between my Xs and my 11 Pro Max using a few HDR videos on YouTube, but couldn’t as only the Xs can play HDR on YouTube.

I got a thread open today.
Yeah YT HDR is not supported yet, tried Vimeo HDR videos and they worked like a charm. For the time being guess I'll stick to Vimeo and hopefully either Youtube or Apple update the app soon.

The Amazon Prime app - on the iPad at least - will only stream at 720p. You have to use Safari and the Amazon website to stream at 1080p - no 4k.
