MP 6,1 Latest Boot ROM and SMC version on Mac Pro Late 2013 (trashcan)

Hi, I am planning to upgrade the SSD on my Mac Pro 2013 (trashcan) with a third party NVME drive and all of them seems to require to have the latest Boot ROM version / SMC version in order to work properly with the machine. My system is showing Boot ROM Version: 130.0.0.0.0 and SMC Version (system): 2.20f18

Are these the latest versions available ? Thanks.

If you've installed 10.14.5 or the last security updates for either Sierra or High Sierra, you have the latest versions. This list should be accurate as well: https://eclecticlight.co/2018/10/31/which-efi-firmware-should-your-mac-be-using-version-3/

Mine is at 127.0.0.0.0 or something - the version that came with one of the earliest Mojave releases. Works fine with an NVMe as it is so I don't think you'll strictly need the absolute 'latest & greatest', just needs to be recent enough to include boot support for this kind of drive.

Mine is also showing Boot ROM Version 130.0.0.0.0 and SMC Version 2.20f18. I'm running Mojave 10.14.5 so I assume these to be the latest versions. The link mentioned above confirms 130.0.0.0.0 is the latest Boot ROM Version; nobody seems to bother keeping track of SMC versions.

Mine is the same: 130.0.0.0.0 and SMC 2.20f18 running Mojave 10.14.5.

edit: Looks like 10.14.6 updated the bootrom again as it is now 132.0.0.0.0 on my 6,1.

Mine is showing 129.0.0.0.0 and fails the integrity check when I run eficheck in Terminal. I’m running latest Catalina DP5. How do I force a firmware update?

Reinstall your Apple SSD and boot 10.14.6, doing so will upgrade the firmware to the current one. Catalina firmware upgrades are not consistently working, worked for some of the releases and not for others.

I’ve never removed my Apple SSD and now that I’m in Catalina, it refuses to boot via USB. Maybe I have a bad USB...I’ll try another.

* UPDATE *

Curiously during boot, my USB ports are turned off but I was able to get around this by connecting an old FireWire 800 compact flash reader to a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter and boot from that....currently installing Mojave but still no firmware update indication.

* UPDATE 2 *

Yup, downgrading to Mojave fixed the firmware. Now at 132.0.0.0.0.

You can't get the same I post here, it's from the firmware code, but you can easily check the version from terminal.

I have just updated my MacPro6,1 to latest version of Catalina 10.15.6 19G73 from 10.15.5 and my Boot ROM version moved from 136.0.0.0.0 to 137.0.0.0.0.

The strange thing is that I have Intel SSD and to update Boot ROM I didn't swap it with an apple SSD.

Anyone else could confirm that now when updating to macOS Catalina 10.15.6 the BootROM can be updated as well but with any NVME brand installed ? If this is true then there would be no point anymore to keep or keep buying an Apple OEM SSD drive just to be able to update the BootROM version of the machine, right ?

Yeah you can update the Boot ROM now with a 3rd party NVMe installed. Apple enabled that a couple updates ago. If I recall correctly tsialex mentioned which version that was in another thread. However, it still needs to be identified as an internal drive. If you have it installed on a carrier board like the AngelShark then that will have to be removed first.

So no reason to keep an Apple OEM SSD handy. I've read there was an issue with a panic if Boot Camp is used on a 3rd party NVMe, but I haven't tested that to see if that's been resolved too.

I have had my MacPro since 2014 and installed the aura pro X2 in 2018. The MP61.0120.B00 Boot ROM came with High Sierra update in 2017 and included support for NVMe booting. Why has Boot ROM not updated since? Latest MacPro6,1 Boot ROM is 137.0.0.0.0
