"I highly recommend using CPU-Z and hwinfo64, but it is easily possible to pull CPUID info OS X"

how ?

I have my 6212U installed again in the MP7,1 ( second time ! ) with Beta 10.15.3 .

I'm not certain I want to even shut her down before we determine the CPUID .

We may have one shot at this .

Maybe this?
It is based on CPU-Z according to the site. Link at the end of the article for version 3.1.

Well , despite its name , the utility didn't inform us of the CPUID number . It gives us some chip info and a nice list of processor features supported . But no CPUID number ... :( .

Cascade Lakes are very closely related to Skylakes BTW .

Probably wrong, but maybe this: SRF9A

::EDIT:: Yes, wrong; that is the sSpec number; use it to find the CPUID.

Yes , that's the S-spec number . That's also a production chip verification number . Strangely , this chip has no ES or QS versions reported .

OK , some good news folks .

With tsialex's assistance , we have verified the Gold 6212U's CPUID is 50657 . So this silicon is definitely in the supported list .

He determined it by this method :

It's just a matter to convert family/model/stepping to hex and rearrange it:

machdep.cpu.family: 6 = 0x06h
machdep.cpu.model: 85 = 0x55h
machdep.cpu.stepping: 7 = 0x07h

CPUID format is this:

The second number from model in hex: 5
The two model numbers in hex: 06
First number from model in hex: 5
The second number from stepping in hex: 7

So, CPUID in hexa = 50657
[automerge]1577749208[/automerge]
Additional good news !

The Gold 6212U upgraded MP7,1 survived a shut down and cold boot . I did not restart it . Nor did I reset NVRAM .

The Gold 6212U upgraded MP7,1 also survived a shut down , a SMC reset and a cold boot . Again , I did not restart it . Nor did I reset NVRAM .

The next test is the scary one . I will attempt to reset the NVRAM and see if the System still recognizes this upgrade .

I currently have beta 10.15.3 installed and the boot ROM and iBridge versions shown in my last screen grab .

machdep.cpu.family: 6 = 0x06h
machdep.cpu.model: 85 = 0x55h
machdep.cpu.stepping: 7 = 0x07h

CPUID format is this:

The second number from model in hex: 5
The two model numbers in hex: 06
First number from model in hex: 5
The second number from stepping in hex: 7
Shouldn't the word I underlined be "family"?

Also, I noted in your screen grab that MacCPUID returns the required numbers in addition to the Terminal command. Good to know.

After showing @Snow Tiger how to get the Intel CPUID from family/model/stepping, I noticed that Apple already have this humanly parsed correctly but obscured it totally by using the name signature and showing it with the wrong decimal notation.

So, to show the CPUID for any CPU with the notation that Intel use thru all the documentation, is just a matter of calling sysctl -x machdep.cpu.signature:

[automerge]1577781527[/automerge]
Correcting what I posted to @Snow Tiger using my iPhone at the time:

It's just a matter to convert family/model/stepping to hex and rearrange it:

machdep.cpu.family: 6 = 0x06
machdep.cpu.model: 85 = 0x55
machdep.cpu.stepping: 7 = 0x07

CPUID format in resume is just this:

The first number from machdep.cpu.model in hex: 5
The two numbers from machdep.cpu.family in hex: 06
The second number from machdep.cpu.model in hex: 5
The second number from machdep.cpu.stepping in hex: 7

So, CPUID in hexa = 50657. Anyway, Apple already have it ready for you:

Code:
sysctl -x machdep.cpu.signature

Yes , all that needs to be done now to identify the CPUID of a Xeon is to discover it's cpu.signature ( which is in decimal ) and convert it into hexidecimal ( which is the CPUID that Intel uses ) .

For my Gold 6212U , terminal reports it as machdep.cpu.signature: 329303 . Using a decimal to hexadecimal converter gives us 50657 .

And that confirms this chip is compatible in this System , since 50657 is the only production microcode supported in the MP7,1's firmware ( at this time , at any rate . I don't suppose this will change as Cascade Lake is end of the road for socket compatibility ) . Ice and Tiger Lakes will never be installable in a MP7,1 .

Just use -x, will give the hex dump of the value:

sysctl -x machdep.cpu.signature

Well , to those still following my progress I regret to inform you that for the second time my Gold 6212U upgraded MP7,1 has failed to survive a NVRAM reset . It is now offline again . Just a black screen , no power to the mouse / keyboard and consumes around 100 W at the wall continuously .

Looks like for now the only processor upgrades that work with the MP7,1 are the W-series Xeons .

We already determined the CPUID using other programs and a decimal to hexadecimal conversion tool .

The CPU I used , a Gold 6212U , is already known as supported for the MP7,1 .

Something else is preventing a survival of the NVRAM reset , probably Apple security and involving the factory SSD .

should . At least the Apple shipping models . I helped the first person ( MR member zhpenn ) who performed a W-3275M upgrade in the MP7,1 last year . He said he NVRAM reset his Mac . And he seems to think everything is running fine .
I am impressed beyond words that you have been able to uninstall and reinstall CPUs in the 7.1 without a catastrophe.
I envision docking and undocking these CPUs much like watching the Hindenburg attempt it.

Hey everyone) I'm planning to buy a new Mac Pro and want to install a non M version of intel xeon W-3275. I'm not a tech specialist and I really don't like to do something even a little bit risky inside my workstation, but overpaying $3000 for the RAM limit I will probably never need is too bad.
So is there a confirmation that non M versions are absolutely compatible and will work as good as M versions?
And that intel xeon W upgrades for the new MP work perfect in general?

So is there a confirmation that non M versions are absolutely compatible and will work as good as M versions?
And that intel xeon W upgrades for the new MP work perfect in general?

Well , we only have one verified report that the W series Xeon upgrade attempt works . And English is not that upgrader's first language , so communication is not perfect . Did he really perform a NVRAM reset properly ? Remember , the Mac will work with an unapproved Cascade Lake Xeon upgrade . It's just that only the W Series Xeons ( at this time ) will survive a NVRAM reset . And we no longer get start up chimes with a NVRAM reset with the newer Macs , so the audio verification is gone ( which is easy to talk about and observe ) .

There is no verification that the non M versions work , but they should . They are in the smallest possible subfamily of Cascade Lake Xeons that Apple uses .

If you don't have some basic technical skill , you might not want to consider doing this on your own . I'm an experienced tech and even I get nervous every time I swap out silicon with this model . Its much more risky than installing Skylake / Cascade Lake Xeons on the PC side ( which uses much safer PHMs ) . Every time I do this upgrade , I feel one day I'll roll a pair of snake eyes and fry the processor and logic board .

If you do the upgrade , just take your time . Don't panic . Be cautious . Finger installation and removal of the processor is not easy , because of the obstruction caused by the two heatsink standoff plates . The socket has three times the number of pins of the socket most processor upgrade installers here at MR are familiar with . And the silicon is big , heavy and expensive . And finger installation is definitely not safe . Apple has a method or device they are not sharing with us . Eventually , we'll find out . Performing a System tear down to install or remove the processor might just be the safest method at the moment . Maybe that's just the way Apple techs are expected to perform this operation . We don't know since we don't have the service manual yet .

One piece of advice I'd like to share is this : do not apply thermal paste directly onto the silicon . Thermal paste just the heatsink and apply just thinly enough so you don't see the metal of the thermal area of the heatsink . Just a very thin application ! Don't clean the processor of old paste while its still installed in the socket , either . Wait until its safely removed before you clean it . The paste Apple applies at the factory seems quite dry , but I've noticed this with two other PC LGA3647 heatsink manufacturers so it seems to be an industry standard . I still prefer using messy and moist Arctic MX4 because of its superb durability .

Thanks for the reply=) You've just scared me so much that I'm not sure I want to do that anymore. If I decide to do that, I'll definitely try to find professionals in my country) I didn't even think about changing it on my own haha) The thing is, I'm now scared that they also might screw up )))) Probably I'm going to wait some time for the new information)

P.S If Apple just gave us the option of M and non M CPUs, life would be so much easier, but that's Apple =(

Anyone know if a Mac Pro server 5,2 with 1 cpu has the same board so I could upgrade to 2 cpus. I found one locally but haven’t had time to look in it.

Could you clarify what model you are discussing ? A list of all Macintosh models is available at EveryMac.com
