Really appreciate the UI refresh. Elements come together to create a nice, fresh experience. I think that font display is tweaked too, I am on a MacBook Air 2017 and text is looking really good. Text is the first thing I noticed on my display, and I am very happy with it. I can imagine that macOS Big Sur would look stunning on Retina displays.

The new dialog boxes, the icons, sounds, so far I like where they are at now. Trash sound could be improved. Feels more like "booted" than something thrown in the trash. Animations are smooth on my hardware, I can only imagine how blistering performance we are going to have on tap in the coming years. I thought I wouldn't like the iOS-like icons, but they are fine. Skeuomorphism is coming back in a nice way, particularly in icons. Launchpad never looked so clean. Design language and symbols and iconography are done well. This is feeling better than the preceding macOS. Optimised height between menu options is a huge plus.

In Messages, if the sender does not support replies, the To field is empty.

Also, Finder continues to improve on the iPhone connection experience and initial setup has Accessibility options. I do not think these options were presented at initial setup before.

I have high hopes from this release and the future now, from the consumer point of view. The whole system feels eerily similar to iOS/ iPadOS, which means familiar, and that is probably what Apple is aiming for, while keeping the macOS experience and functionality (and purpose). Developer point of view remains to be seen and will become clearer in the coming days.

EDIT: Added some more screenshots. Also, noticed that tab titles in Safari are now readable for me at the angle I use my screen. Previously on Catalina, they were hard to read. So far, text and readability improvements are under-appreciated facets of Big Sur, in my opinion.

Anyone have issues where the installer said you didn’t have enough disk space? Especially for people with 128 SSD?? I had fusion drive 2TB that I split into C and D drive, OS and DTa drive, this way I can always wipe OS. Ur keep my data . Screw fusion drive lol.... but yeh installer complained even when I had 60GB free it wanted another 9 GB which is crazy!!! I ended up my moving my outlook 18GB folder to my data drive and than I was able to install!!

some how I feel this a huge bug or something! After update I removed the huge installer dragged my outlook profile folder back and I have 55 GB of free space right now.

btw love the new vertion

I have a feeling that iCloud Keychain has lost some data. Unless, it is taking time to download. Anyone else with this issue? Fresh install only.

I cannot get Safari to launch at all. Every time it launches it immediately crashes with the error “Safari quit unexpectedly.”

Tried everything from restarts, holding Shift when launching, deleting extensions from Finder. I have no idea how to fix this and it seems nobody else is reporting the same issue.

Anybody have an suggestions? ?

In the World Clock widget, the clock face colors are switched - dark for daytime and light for nighttime. In the screenshot, New York is showing 7:38am, Tokyo is 8:38pm etc.

Sure it was the first beta, but I guess it was too much to hope for some basic stability after all these years. i couldn't get rid of it fast enough. It really doesn't have to be like this every year. Seems to get worse and less compatible every year. Pretty windows at the cost of basic functionality. Didn't like it one bit.

Under System Preferences - Date and Time, the Menu Bar Clock settings cannot be changed. Even though the menu bar is set to display a 24-hour clock, a 12-hour clock is shown.

Under System Preferences - Battery, although the option to show the battery status in the menu bar is not selected it is still being displayed.

Sooo the chime returned to my 2018 MBP. I had not turned it back on manually, this is just back in Big Sur.

2020 MBA, got the chimes as it was installing and every time it rebooted during install. Since then it doesn't chime either after rebooting or after powering off/on.

I am also noticing with Steam the only option is to remote play, even on games I have installed. I wouldn't be surprised if their filter is based off "Mac OS 10.x" and they need to change it to Mac OS 10.X and 11.x"

Probably you have your Safari set up at ‘view icons screen’. You should remove all your bookmarks first. Then click the address bar and do a command click on the Favorites tab that is displaying under the addressbar. Uncheck ‘show view icons’ and you should be fine.

I had this unexpected crashing thing yesterday too.

Upgraded my 2015 MBP and the only issues I can find is the lack of the new colorful wallpaper. When I select it in Settings it will show one of the wallpapers from Catalina. Any workaround?

Really?? Did you even read my post? This is what it looks like on Catalina:

Tokyo is nighttime, so a black clock face, Cupertino and NY times are daytime, hence white clock face. To repeat, Big Sur has the colors switched.

And this is why it is called a beta, as clearly for the same widget, your experience and mine are different. :p I checked with a couple places for me, it shows just fine. My location is shown dark and Antwerp is shown white, which it would be, it is late afternoon there (at the time of checking). Beta woes!

I am facing a couple of bugs.

iCloud and Safari

Do not play nice together. Previously, I would see my iPhone Safari Tabs listed under My iPhone Name and My Mac Name. Now, they show as My iPhone Name (1) and I have seen that go as high as (9) for my phone as well as Mac, randomly. Something is borked here with iCloud and Safari.

iCloud Keychain

Is borked as well. I lost all my iCloud Keychain passwords. Initially some of them were there, but when it came to my notice that some are not and I checked, I restarted the computer and the phone both, I disabled and re-enabled Keychain on both iPhone and Mac, and lo and behold, all passwords gone. Clean slate ahoy!

So, something is definitely borked between Safari and iCloud.

Beyond this, I have not seen any other missing data so far. Time will tell.

What are you implying? Somehow you do not have the default wallpapers for Big Sur?

Thanks for this! I somehow though managed to just resolve the issue before seeing your response. Bizarre fox but it seems simply downloading the Xcode Beta fixed the crashing on launch.
