Hey!

I has happened to me several times that mail app is really slow to be open, not just the first time I open it during a session but every damn time I open it. Like a minute or so.

It just happens and it doesn't return to its normal behavior —opening almost instantly— until I delete ~/Library/Mail.

While Mail is trying to open, fseventsd process is in the background using 100% of the resources. It's really really really weird in my opinion and I've tried other methods to fix it like clean with onyx, or just delete the ~/Library/Mail/V7/MailData and nothing works.

Is anyone also experiencing this behavior? My computer is quite new. MBP 2019 and it has the last macOS version… (10.15.4) it has been happening almost in every previous versions of mojave

I've been experiencing the same issue, exactly as you describe, since upgrading to 10.15 a few weeks ago. I do have some large mailboxes (>100k messages) but not sure this is directly related - they were fine prior to 10.15.

I haven't tried removing ~/Library/Mail/ and reconfiguring everything to see if that resolves it but I'll give that a go.

Just an update.

I experienced the issue again today after install the supplementary update to 10.15.4. I just deleted ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail, which contains the mail preferences, and it worked. I just need to setup again a couple of things and that's it.

Thanks! That worked for me too. All I had to do after removing ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail was re-setup a few of the preferences.

Anyhow this is a recurring problem… I've just deleted the folder again and config everything as I wanted and create a .back folder to see if I can restore.

I finally figure out which the specific offending file, at least in my case:

Bash:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/DataVaults/MailBundles/Library/Mail/Bundles/Properties.plist

In my case I just delete that file and things go back to normal without any consequence. I don't need to reset my config. As far as I know.

I guess that the file gets corrupted or something.

Thank you! This has been bugging me off and on in recent months, and just when I thought it was fixed, it came back. Mail would take 5-10 seconds to launch when the problem occured, but removing this file restored the instant-open I've been used to and expect.

Thanks for posting this! Did you use csrutil disable to delete this file or is there any other way? I ask since I get Operation not permitted.

Operation not permitted? not in my case, that is more… I've created a bash function to delete it from time to time.

Perhaps you have still open a mail instance or something. And even on that event I think I could delete it.

I have this issue & would appreciate some help.

I cannot see the ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail in my Finder.

I only have ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent.

I'd appreciate any assistance around finding the.plist file to delete to try & fix my mail.

Thanks in advance

If you are using finder… the folder is shown just as Mail, not com.apple.mail.

Thank you.

I have 6 folders called mail there, all with data as a folder, but nothing called DataVaults in them...

Any thoughts?
TIA,

LA

You have Big Sur and there is no longer that folder around. You can delete all the Mail folders and see if you have any improvement, but think that you are going to lose most Mail customizations.

delete ~/Library/Application Support/Mail/Plug-ins/Bundles/Library/Mail/Bundles/Properties.plist
My goodness...you just saved me!!! I was waiting 15+ minutes to get my mail app to open, rebooting several times, force quitting... and you just fixed it! THANK YOU SO MUCH sblundgren!!

It seems my Mailbutler plug in to mac mail, which allows delayed sending (like Outlook does) which I need, was causing the problem. When I deleted the properties.plist I no longer had my mailbutler features. I re-enabled the mail butler add in, and so far, mail is opening and functioning fine. If that changes I'll update the thread.
