the problem is that you only have 256MB ram. you need twice that minimum for decent usability with any version of osx.

Oddly enough I installed Tiger on my brother's old Clamshell iBook SE, 466mhz, 320mb RAM (8mb graphics card) and I runs great. Just like Panther did.

Then I installed it on my dad's G4 450mhz AGP with 768mb of RAM (16mb graphics card). It ran sooo slow!! I dunno why. Maybe because it had barley enough power to support some feature or something which slowed it down? None of the machines are Quartz extreme capable...

Odd eh?

I know where you're coming from but I think that statement is abit misleading.
My experience with all versions of OS X upto and including Panther is that 256Mb-384mb works great if 'all' you need to do is run a few servers, listen to music, burn CD's, brose the web, read and send email, watch realplayer/divx/quicktime movies and use MSN Messenger & iChat. I can do all of the above no problem with 384Mb. No heavy hard disk thrashing or instances of 'Spinning Curser of Death'

It's when you start using any pro apps such as Photoshop and Dreamweaver that more RAM makes all the difference.

I have a question for everyone with Tiger.
Does Mail support HTML accounts? The only free Mac app that supports it is Outlook Express. And it's annoying to have to launch the Classic enviroment whenever I feel like checking my e-mail. I've got two Hotmail accounts.

I also don't like the HTML interface for Hotmail. On my PC which I sometimes use, I'm using Outlook 2003 to read my hotmail. I'm only using it because it's better than Outlook Express.

My guess is that the only service Mail supports natively is .Mac - standard POP/IMAP accounts can be configured just like they have always been, and plug-ins will fill in support for things like Hotmail (which I know Apple wouldn't endorse like that).

Since Apple already tie Google in to Safari, does anyone think there maybe any chance of Google agreeing to some way of being able to check your Gmail in Mail app?

true, but this is slower than Panther was at WWDC

sorry if someone else already pointed this out (i don't have time to read the whole thread), but last year we were about 4 months from panther. now we are anywhere from 6 to 12 months from tiger. my guess is 10 months in april or march...

it's slow because it's still in it's very early stages, that should be expected...
but i do think that apple should tune down the visual effects... only the higher end machines being sold now (powermac, 15 and 17 powerbook, and 17 and 20 imac) have graphics cards that can fully take on tiger...
i bought my imac less than a year ago, and already it is becoming obsolete... i think whatever comes after tiger may be as far as i wish to go.... :(

Thanks for your replies.
I am kinda ashamed of having a hotmail account, but I got it before I got a mac.

Awww, don't feel bad. It happens to the best of us. ;) I think httpmail requires you to use something else besides hotmail to do outgoing because you don't have a hotmail smtp server, but otherwise it works golden.

Wardofsky, thanks for that smart folder mail.app picture. That looks sooo cool. I've been wishing that feature existed. Does it have any kinda intelligent or context-driven feature to assign people? It'd be nice if you could right-click an e-mail and queue all subsequent same-sender or subject or whatever e-mails to a folder/mailbox. I have a friends folder and a friends' highlighting rule, but its a little bit of a pain right now to add more friends to the rule, cuz you have to go to prefs, etc, etc.

Tabs gone in Safari??

Just finished installing Tiger on my 800mhz iBook G3. Everything seems to work about as well as it did running Panther. Dashboard takes about 5 seconds to load but that was to be expected. Ok, so I'm a little slow...Thought tabs were gone in Safari but they are not turned on by default.

Is it me or have the pinstripes been removed? It may just be the resolution of the screenshot but it looks rather milky plain white to me. Please say those lovely subtle Panther-style pinstripes remain!!!

does anyone know if a rev c 12"s graphics card can handle the new 3d effects in tiger? that'd be pretty sad if it couldn't, though not entirely unexpected i suppose.

i hope that they change the interface of spotlight-it looks way to XP-ish.

I find your comment here very interesting. Because that was the exact same thing that came to my mind the very first time I saw it. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but the interface reminded me of XP. I think it's sickening.

Does Spotlight have the capability to search within the text of pdfs files or any other documents (rtf, doc, txt)?

I have 1000s of pdf articles and this would awesome if it could.

Yes. On the WWDC Keynote, steve searched for "Half Dome" and it came up with a PDF map of Yosemite, that happened to have the text "Half Dome" inside marking the area.

Presuming you've got the pre-release Safari may be a bit altered as they've just released the 1.3 beta to devs.

Not sure if anyone mentioned safari's new private browsing feature.

directly from teh warning dialog box

"When private browsing is turned on, webpages are not added to the history, items are automatically removed from the Downloads window, information isn't saved for AutoFill (including names and passwords), and searches are not added to the pop-up menu in the Google search box. Until you close the window, you can still click the Back and Forward buttons to return to webpages you have opened."

This happens on my PowerBook 12'', 867mhz. I dunno why. It installed on my brother's Clamshell iBook SE but it didn't create a user account for some reason and now I'm stuck.

:(

Here are my Kernel Panic Photos to prove it:
http://homepage.mac.com/ibook238/PhotoAlbum37.html

I think I got that same panic (the now hanging quote at the end was the same at least) on my Quicksilver 2002 933, even after removing every device (literally, took out all the PCI cards, airport, modem, zip drive, hard drives) in it other than the video card, one stick of 512MB ram, and the Superdrive (DVR-103). It's too bad, I wanted to play with Tiger.

(I'm using a DVD-R of the disk, not fortunate enough to get a real one)

do you think that theres anyway apple might make local searches possible on google in safari. id love to be able to search googles uk site just by typing in the box. instead i have to go to the website. so many times i have to search for something typically english that googles .com site doesnt pick up. there should be a google location selection thingy in the safari preferences.

oh the time it would save me!!!
