RIP to this one:

d800e_DSC_2862_20131011-X3.jpg

This massive machine brought in two firefighting helicopters to Sydney. Unfortunately she was lost in the Ukraine conflict, stuck on the ground and destroyed in the fighting. :( I was lucky to see it a few times. I never got to see the bigger AN-225, it never came to my city and I never managed to be in the right place elsewhere to see it.

The most striking thing with the AN-124-100M-150 (the one above) versus the regular one is the reduced noise. I am not sure if it's entirely the chevrons on the trailing edge of the engine cowlings (like the 747-8 also has) or further engine modifications, but it was a lot quieter than the other AN124s I've seen.

The takeoff procedure is still a classic. They sit on the runway for a set time with the engines roaring away and once they are happy the power is safely set the brakes are released and giant slowly begins to roll.

Most of the times I've photographed these have been at night - they either arrived and or departed late at night. I used 1/4sec shutter speed for the above and ISO3200 and F/5.6 with a Nikon D800e. The lighting of the plane is mainly due to the surrounding airport lights.

A Mandarin Airlines ATR 72-600 (registration B-16859) on flight AE1267, shortly after takeoff from Songshan Airport in Taipei (TSA, RCSS) to Kinmen (KNH, RCBS), one of the outlying islands near the coast off China. Taken on a hike yesterday in the hills of northern Taipei, this time using a digital camera (Panasonic GH5) instead of a film camera for once.

A photo from the very first roll of film I developed at home, when I was just beginning to get serious about film photography some three years ago. Most of those early rolls now look quite disastrous by my current standards, so I guess nearly 200 rolls later I must have slightly improved…? Shot with a Nikon FE on Kentmere Pan 400 and developed in Kodak D-76, long before I learned about highly concentrated developers like HC-110 and Rodinal, and the lazy person's no-fail method of stand development.

Mission Impossible! Had a technically outpatient with overnight stay surgical procedure. During initial recovery bed rest, I was limited to no more than 30 degree elevation and dinner arrived. Rarely take selfies, but couldn’t resist this one. Napkin spanned the gap and only had one small drop of food when finished. Of course, 30 minutes later they disconnected IV and monitor, and walked with me around the ward with no problems. I then challenged them to a wheel chair race which they declined, so I won my default!
