Neither of those. But I don’t live my life waiting to die for my life insurance to kick in. I don’t drive around waiting for a flat tire. 2 different perspectives. Being prepared, or whining about what if’s. I chose the former.Maybe you are the kind of person who drives without a jack and spare tire ? Or don't bother with insurance policies becuase "it'll never happen".
In this case though it's not "if", it's an inevitable "when". You should try taking off those rose colored glasses once in a while.
That’s the “I get the pushback“ part of my post. I’m not ready to go from where we are today to the other extreme just yet. If done right, this could potentially help. At some point, we need to explore ways to use technology for the greater good. If privacy can be maintained (I entrust Apple with my information today), I’m okay with taking this step.No one has an issue with protecting children or holding people accountable. The pushback is that you let this one thing go unopposed it gives them license to keep stripping away your privacy and freedoms. This is like saying, "Well people drive unlicensed, that's illegal, so we are going to mandate that all cars have facial scanners and you'll have to swipe your license card before you can drive a car." There has never been something like this implemented, in history, that didn't lead to more of it happening later and it getting more oppressive and draconian. Shrugging your shoulders just means you're OK with that future.
It isn't Apples or any companies job to be an arm of any law enforcement. Their job is to create products that people want. If in the future your government oppresses you more and draws up laws making companies do these things that is one thing, but you should be very concerned when a company volunteers it.
To many people, Apple is doing what it is doing to stave off the pressure being put upon it from Europe. The EU is pushing hard against tech companies to do more to tackle cyber harressment, cyber bullying, racisim, cyber stalking..and the list goes on and on because if they do not, the EU will place severe penalties on them.No one has an issue with protecting children or holding people accountable. It does feel like governments are saying to Apple "That's an awfully nice monopoly you have there. It would be a shame if anti-trust happened to it."To many people, Apple is doing what it is doing to stave off the pressure being put upon it from Europe. I cannot vouch for what is going on in non-English speaking EU countries but those that provide English speaking papers and website, the theme is a very common one. Days or weeks do not go by where some child advocacy group or female advocacy group or ethnic minority advocacy group is complaining about tech companies not doing enough to remove race hate social media posts or race hate videos or child porn or threats of violence against females or ethnic minorities or some other bad thing and the tech companies just fumble on by giving excuse after excuse as to why they have not done enough to prevent such stuff from appearing on their platform.
Only recently investigators for the UK news channel BBC found that tweets on twitter relating to any or all of the above which had been reported to the company weeks, sometimes months ago was still on the platform. Same went for Youtube and Facebook, many reported videos, some related to child porn was still on the platform and this after the companies said they would do more to remove such stuff.
The EU has finally had enough of the tech companies not doing what they said they would be doing and thus have been warning them that severe action will be taken against them if they do not improve.
Awful step by apple. And the 'alert your parents if you view a nude' is some awful overreach but typical of apple's strangely prudish approach.
