Doctor Q's Extrapolated Posters.​

This is the 20th anniversary and the 41st edition of the MacRumors post-count statistics. It was originally just a simple extrapolation of post-counts to a few future dates. The top post-count back then was 11737, which now only gets you to around rank 120. The presentation has also changed quite a bit, and we now have multiple tables and graphs, with circles and arrows and a paragraph underneath explaining what each one was.

Let's take a quick look back at that original list and compare it to the current Top 50 posters below.

Only @Mr. Anderson is still active and in the current Top 50. @edesignuk is in the Top 50, but inactive. Site founder @arn is active, but not in the Top 50 (see the Full Table 1 post below). @Sun Baked and @iJon are also still active outside the Top 50. Several more are inactive and outside the Top 50, like @eyelikeart, @jelloshotsrule, and @Rower_CPU.

There are probably active members from that first table who don't yet have 5000 posts, so they won't even appear in my collected data. Those are harder for me to find, because I can't just search a local list of post-counts.


As pleasant as reminiscence is, I also have a less pleasant announcement: I will no longer be producing these post-count threads. This is the end, my friends.

My other interests and projects are taking more of my time and attention, so tracking post-counts will have to be marooned on a deserted island. I might post one more thread, because it would be difficult to pass up an Edition 42, but it may not have as much data.

Remarks

1. @maflynn cleared 72,000 posts, with an increased post rate.
   
2. Long-time member @Scepticalscribe is on the cusp of reaching 60,000 posts. She also increased her posting rate substantially.
   
3. @Apple fanboy finally moved past @C DM. @C DM made one post this period, the first since January 2021. This is the lowest non-zero post rate in the Top 50.
   
4. @TheYayAreaLiving moved up 3 ranks, despite another drop in post-rate.
   
5. @I7guy moved past @mad jew to reach the brink of the Top 10.
   
6. @Apple_Robert also moved past @mad jew, just in time to make this thread.
   
7. @ucfgrad93 and @Clix Pix moved up several ranks each.
   
8. @leman entered the Top 50.

At ranks 11 and 12, I7guy and Apple_Robert moved past mad jew.

@eyoungren and @Fishrrman were projected to be at ranks 18 and 19, which they achieved.
@jav6454 was projected to reach rank 25, which didn't happen.

@Huntn reached the projected rank of 28, with a post-count close to the prediction.
@Nermal and @ucfgrad93 also reached their projected ranks

Info About All Graphs

The horizontal X axes represent dates, and are labeled as YYYY-MM-DD.

The vertical Y axes are automatically determined, and are specific to a graph. The upper and lower limits of each graph are based on the range of values in the graphed data. This means that the steepness of line slopes can't be compared between different graphs.

Colors are also automatically assigned, from a rotating pool of 12 colors. This can make color-to-name conversion ambiguous when more than 12 members are graphed. Use each graph's legend or key on the right to resolve any duplicate colors. The legend is arranged in the same order as the right-most points of each graph.

A dashed line is automatically assigned to inactive users (no posts in the latest measurement period), and a solid line to active users (at least 1 post in latest period). To reduce the clutter, the only inactive user typically shown is @mad jew.


Graphs of Top 50 Post-Counts Over Time

These two graphs show the progression of semi-annual post counts for the Top 50 posters, starting from 2016 July 3rd (2016-07-03). Users who made no posts in the last 6 months are omitted, except for the historical benchmark represented by @mad jew. The member listed last in Group 1 appears in both graphs, with different colors. This overlap is intentional.

Top 50 Posters: In Two Groups

A horizontal graph line (or nearly so) is a member with a low post rate.

A steeply rising slope indicates a high post rate. If the slopes of the segments steepens over time, that user is increasing their post rate. If the slopes flatten, the post rate is falling off.

In the lower graph, we see @Mr. Anderson has become active after a long hiatus, and reading Table 1, it was 10 posts. Looking at his online post history, the prior public post was in 2010. He's the only member appearing in the very first "Extrapolated" thread who's still active and in the Top 50. The slight upward blip before 2020-01-03 is due to 2019's November Anomaly, not any real posts.

@jav6454 shows marked changes in post-rate. First, there's a huge increase in the first half of 2022, then a moderate decrease in the second half, then nearly flat in the latest half. Contrast this with a fairly steady increase by @Huntn, and a distinctive knee for @leman starting in late 2020.

Cluttered Graphs

The first graph below shows all the members from the two graphs above in a single graph. It's more cluttered and difficult to read.

We can still see a marked change in line slope for several members at different times, and the sharp upward slope for TheYayAreaLiving.

The second graph, which adds the remaining inactive members in the Top 50, is even more cluttered.

The main reason for showing these is to compare all the slopes together (post-count growth rates). This gives an idea of how much the most prolific posters actually posted, and when.

Graphs of Weekly Post-Count Growth

The following graphs show weekly post-count growth for the most prolific 36 users, divided into 3 groups of 12 each. There is no overlap between groups.

There's a gap in the data between 2023-03-12 and 2023-03-26. That, and the irregular date 2023-02-27, which should be 2023-02-26, are due to my data collection errors.

Each line represents one user's weekly post-count growth, relative to their post count at the start of the measurement period 6 months ago. In effect, each member gets their own "starting count", and the graph shows how their individual post count grows from week to week.

If a member makes a lot of posts for a week, then their line will slope up more steeply. If they make no posts for a week, then their line will be flat. In rare cases, a line may drop a little, which means that some posts were deleted, or a thread was moved to an uncounted forum.

Since the members of each group have different ranges, you can't compare slopes between graphs. A steep line in one graph might not represent the same post rate in another graph. To get a sense of overall weekly growth, we need a single graph with all the Prolific Posters, which is shown after the groups of 12.


Weekly Post Growth

In the upper Group 1 graph, TheYayAreaLiving's post rate is so high it squeezes the other members of Group 1 into a small range with little detail. The lines for @Wxchaser and @Realityck are visible, but other details are jammed together.

The lower graph removes the most prolific poster, which reduces the top Y value by about 3 times. This lets us see more detail than is evident in the upper graph.

In Groups 2 & 3 we see several posters with wavering lines, which means several weeks with fewer posts (flatter), and several weeks with more (steeper).

In the above graph we can compare slopes, which gives a better sense of how prolific the top posters are, compared to everyone else.

This graph omits the most prolific posters. Because the vertical max depends on the range of values graphed, it shows more detail in the lower range.

Welcome to the final "Fun With Graphs", or "Finale With Graphs". We'll see some graphs of things other than the usual semi-annual and weekly posts.


Top 50 Changes: Details

The graph shows the Top 13, rather than the usual Top 10. This is so we can see @I7guy and @Apple_Robert passing mad jew, and the relationship of them to the Top 10. Weaselboy sits at #10.

In the upper graph, we again see I7guy and Apple_Robert passing mad jew. We also see a handful of others heading toward the Top 10.

In the lower graph we see a more detailed view of when I7guy and Apple_Robert passed mad jew.


Prolific

This graph shows the weekly post counts of the 13 most prolific posters. The lowest value of 5618 is near the bottom of the range of posters whose data I collect. This means the graph covers nearly the whole range of tracked post-counts.


Graphs of the Ancients
We began this thread by looking back 20 years, so now let's look at a few graphs for some of those ancient posters. Unfortunately, my collection of graphable data doesn't go earlier than 2016, so the oldest we can see is a semi-annual post growth for some members I have data for.

This looks like several members made more than 100 posts in the 2nd half of 2019. In reality, it's the November Anomaly again, rather than any real posts. Unfortunately, it's a large jump compared to the real posting rates, so it obscures more than it reveals.

Here, I've used the weekly dataset, with readings at 6-week intervals. This gives a better long-term picture while avoiding the November Anomaly. The gap is a missed data capture.

We see Sun Baked was dormant before Feb 2022, then became more active. There's still only 61 posts total between Feb 2022 and now, so "more active" is relative. iJon shows a more consistent post rate than Sun Baked, but still very low -- roughly 20 posts since Aug 2020.

Mr. Anderson shows a negative growth in early 2021. This typically happens when a thread where someone has posted is deleted. There's that all-important uptick in the final interval, which was enough to make an appearance this time as an active poster.

jelloshotsrule only has a couple of posts in 2020, with nothing since. Others were completely inactive, or lost posts due to deletions.

This graph comes from the same weekly dataset, but shows every week in the last 6 months, with the only gaps being due to my collecting errors.

We see Sun Baked making a few posts every few weeks, with Mr. Anderson dormant until the last few weeks. iJon makes a post early in the year, then another in April. Everyone else is dormant.

I joined the forum in July 2008 (shortly after I had purchased my first Apple computer, a MBP, which was a belated birthday present), and I recall reading these six monthly "Top 50 Posters Extrapolated" threads with fascination.

While I never envisaged that I would find myself featuring in such a list - for, MR was the first online community I had ever joined, and I only joined because I had questions I wished to ask about my new computer - hardly any of the names who featured in that Top 50 Posters Extrapolated that I read the following January are still posting regularly.

Doctor Q and Chown, thank you both for having started and carried on this MR tradition for so many years! It has always been a special and unique aspect of the site. It's really fun and interesting to read and view the lists and the graphs -- as a visual person, for me the graphs in particular really make some situations very clear. It's fascinating seeing the pattern of activity levels as they have ebbed and changed through the years, too, not to mention how some people have have come and gone while others of us are still hanging out here!

It makes me sad that this fun statistics tradition is now coming to an end; sometimes it becomes necessary, though, and unfortunately it often really is for the best.

Of course it was neat today to look at my own new ranking and positions on the graphs and to note how with occasional ebbs-and-flows here and there over time (I joined in 2005) there was steady progression along the way. In general, I've been fairly consistent in my posting activity on here and try to make my participation in discussions or image sharing meaningful. MR has definitely long been an educational, fun and always interesting forum in which to participate. First site I visit every day!

I computed it myself. mad jew will be bumped off the Top 50 on January 19, 2043 when CWallace passes him with 32,193 posts.

Then again, the world may end 5 years earlier, to the day, on January 19, 2038, at 03:14:07 UTC, due to the Epochalypse. mad jew will be #31 then, so if the world ends then he'll never have dropped off the Top 50!

Yes, that is one word.

However, for some of us, a high post count coincided (or coincides) with a period in your life when domestic challenges (such as my mother's dementia) take such absolute priority that there is not much room for anything else - apart from, perhaps, one's immediate professional concerns.

In other words, - and certainly, writing from my own personal perspective - a high post count cincided with periods when circumstances meant that I was responsible for caring for my mother, which meant a limited (to non-existent) social life other than whatever outlets were supplied by the online world.

Not posting on other social media contributes to my high post count.
Also originality the older software used to merge posts so people not quoting multiple posts would still only have one post (if no one posted in between).
These days it doesn’t.
I think I once counted 35 posts from one person in one thread without reply in the space of 25 minutes.
Under the old system that would have been one post.

Actually @chown33 that would be an interesting stat. How the posting changed under the old platform rules to the new. I’d expect a massive spike.

If I recall correctly, the system of merging posts was to prevent spamming behavior, thread-bumping behavior and other excessive posting in order to reach some members' perceived goals (for instance, in the old days, one couldn't have an avatar until having made 500 posts).

If memory serves, the old system automatically merged posts if a number of consecutive posts had been made (without anyone posting anything in between) over a period of time - I think - it may have been an hour.

However, if you made consecutive posts - but more than an hour apart - they did appear as separate posts.

Nevertheless, both @Apple fanboy and @Clix Pix make a good point when they note that the old method did serve somewhat to curb - or discourage - a possible tendency to spam.

That said, I appreciate the energy and life behind these forums. Apple has, and continues to, inspire people.
