I'm in NYC and it really depends on where you are. I have Tmobile and on the above ground train I take I get a mix of E, no service or 4G compared to my older company Metro PCS which have me better service on the train. That's just on the train though. In Manhattan I have had no problem really however I've not went ALL over Manhattan. I had VZW years ago as well as ATT. VZW was always the best. When it breaks down to monthly bill and usage I font want to pay the higher fees for slightly better coverage. My calls don't drop and I am able to surf almost everywhere. Try out the TMO phone first and if it's lacking but the VZW one.

Carrier Verizon - T Mobile in NYC

my iphone 5 is AT&T, work galaxy s3 is verizon, know people with t-mo
if 100 is a perfect cell network then verizon is 99 and at&T is 97 or 98. both are the same in NYC except verizon is better in elevators

It is truly unlimited, never any throttling down ever due to how much data you've used.
I've had Verizon LTE on my Galaxy Nexus, ATT LTE on my Lumia 920 and T-Mobile LTE on my Nexus 4 in NYC.
Just to offer my opinion:
Verizon is freaking fast - everywhere. They are unstoppable, really. I can't remember a time that I wasn't getting insane ping times, with exceptional download speed.
ATT LTE - definitely top notch. I've got no complaints, but it just isn't Verizon level. It works most of the time.
T-Mobile LTE - when it works, it's freaking awesome. Most of The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Northern/Central New Jersey -- it works splendidly. Manhattan (especially Southern) is hit and miss. But for the amount I save over Verizon - it's a tradeoff I'll do every single time.
T-mobile is definitely my go-to to save money. Even when it's not on LTE, their HSPA+ is everywhere and more than enough, even though pings can be horrible.
I have a friend that swears by Sprint LTE, which is gaining a lot in NYC. Aside from being unlimited, it's garbage in my eyes though. When it works, it's fine, but it doesn't work consistently at all.

just remember that download test and real world performance are two different things.

dude just google the speed tests lol. Obviously all the ones i posted were flukes. Best part is i dont even have Tmobile.

In any case, even if i'm wrong about Tmobile, i'm not wrong about Verizon not being the fastest LTE out there like the OP suggested. Verizon's LTE network may be more mature and advanced, but its not winning any speed test battles. That's all i'm going to say on the subject matter.
