Load time on a handheld=Bad IMO
I don't see how it is any worse than a regular console. Which I think the PSP has faster load times than a console.

Check the Core Bundle....it doesn't come with one.
Sorry. When I bought mine there were two models to choose from a 32MB model and a 1GB model.

More hidden fees?
And the DS doesn't? How about a stylus that you can actually hold and use? Or a case? (Maybe the DS comes with a case. Not for sure.)

Touch screen+stylus functions pretty well as an analog stick...plus more
Because everyone likes to hold a pen when they play games. :p AAABBBAABAAA...wait! use the styl... Oh, I died. ;)

I disagree..but its a personal choose, so I can't force to to like other games. I am interest how DS are "lacking" though...
That's why I said I can't argue about games. Everyone has personal preference. (Actually can't really can't argue about any of the stuff mentioned above. Each system is unique and I feel have different target audiences. But....) And sorry for the confusion, when I said lacking I mean there were no games for the DS.

As I've said in many previous threads, I play sports games 95% of the time. Find me a package of sports games that are better on the DS than the PSP.

But whatever... You like what you like and I like what I like. :D

It's quite significant on the go, actually. Generally with handhelds people want to pick up and play for a little bit, maybe a quick ten-twenty minute session. Having zero load times makes this short game session much more enjoyable.

And the DS doesn't? How about a stylus that you can actually hold and use?

What the heck are you talking about? I've never bought a stylus for the DS. The base one is great. Heck, it came with a spare in the box.

DS = Dust collecting with Style.
PSP = Ephing Super Phun!
:D :p Sorry, just had to.

All in good fun!

Considering my 14 DS games...Dust collecting is hardly the term I'd use.

Besides. PSP stands for:
Progressive Supranuclear Palsy
Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning
Praja Socialist Party

See? Buy a PSP, and it'll paralyze you and make you a communist. :p

You forgot the real name-

Playstation Portable.

Yea. Load times? Haha. No way daddio, I hate them on a console (I'd just like to play the game, kthx) and on a handheld I'm stuck holding a brick whilst a little progress bar fills. I'm sorry but as a gamer brought up in the 80's and 90's I'm sick of loading full stop. I think that's one of the reasons why I've always preferred proper portable consoles as they do away with loading. It's cool if you like loading - I don't.

That said the DS isn't perfect there. Saving in Pokemon can take quite a while... Alright. thats it :D but it still takes a while

PCMacUser - the DS has that functionality too. You close the lid and enters the same minimal power using sleep mode the PSP has. Even the GBA had a few games with a sleep function.

From what I can tell, the DS consoles focus more on cute G-rated games. Personally I'm not into the cartoony animal things. But some people are, and I can respect that (cough).

Dude, who cares? I play games for fun. If cartoony game A is more fun than realistic-looking game B, I'll play game A, thank you very much.

You make it sound like people buy a DS because they like cartoons.

I play Mario Kart because Mario Kart is FUN.

And please, do explain to me how Metroid is "cartoony".

Now you've dun didify it, but that does work! :)

How about:
DS = Dynamite collection of Super games.
PSP = Portable Super Potty. :D Ok, that was very childlish of me and doesn't really work.

<]=)

Well, if we are poking fun, I'm gonna point out the most obvious one.......
Ds Sucks! :p j/k

They are both awesome portables and seems to be doing well in theri own right.
Like most have already stated, its about what kind of games(among other "portable" features) you prefer. ;)

I was referencing Zap's comment about hidden fees for the PSP for buying a nub, as I called it. The analog stick is usable and you don't need to buy the nub. Same goes for the DS stylus. The thing is tiny. And I find it extremely hard to hold. While you didn't buy a different stylus some people have. I'm just saying this could be considered a hidden fee.

As for using the stylus. I think it would be distracting having to use the stylus in the middle of a game like Mario. Where you are running a jumping and pressing the A and B buttons but then have to stop in the middle to use the stylus.

Considering my 14 DS games...Dust collecting is hardly the term I'd use.
And considering my 5 games for my PSP.... Dust collecting is hardly the term I'd use either.

That's a good one. I'm one the train and really have to go... Good thing I have my PSP, Portable Super Potty!!!! :D You can use it in public right?

We could come up with this all day.
DS = Dog Sh__ or Donkey Kong Sh__
PSP = Pure Sh__ Platform or Princess Secretly Prefers
Ok, those aren't very good but anyways.... enough before it gets too graphic.

I have a DS Lite and a PSP. I play my DS Lite every day. Apart from a couple of months of non-stop GTA: Liberty/Vice City Stories addiction, my PSP collects dust. I even play my Game Boy Micro a huge amount more than my PSP, the games are just in a different league.
I have around 30 DS games, 35 GBA games and 5 PSP games. I have to admit that there are a few PSP games on the horizon that I am getting excited about; Castlevania, God of War and a few others, but there are still many more DS games I am anticipating.
My opinion is that the PSP is just a compromised home console, crushed into a small space, sacrificing many things, but the Game Boy Micro and the DS Lite are not trying to be what they're not, and are just made to be fun.

As for using the stylus. I think it would be distracting having to use the stylus in the middle of a game like Mario. Where you are running a jumping and pressing the A and B buttons but then have to stop in the middle to use the stylus.

Obviously, game developers realised this early on, so therefore it doesn't happen. Any games where you use both the buttons and the touch screen, you can normally just use your fingers for the touch screen. And the stylus on the DS Lite is noticeably bigger than the original DS stylus, which is probably the only one you've tried.

i can't really compare the ds with the psp, as i haven't played one, but i had this choice a couple of weeks ago, and wen't for the ds. in the end, it was the loading times that did it, plus the fact that as my gf has one too, we can play together really easily! So far i am really chuffed with it, i have new super mario bros, which is excellent, if a little short; the hasbro collection, because i love monopoly; metroid prime hunters, which is a really absorbing game, especially for a handheld; and tetris ds, a game that i literally can't put down!

the ds seems more durable to me, its cheap, and the games are a real laugh (especially multiplayer), so i am chuffed with it. i'm sure the psp is great too, but i just can't see the point of loading times...i like to be able to pick the thing up and play for a few minutes, not wait for ages to simply play a game!

But...that never happens.

In Mario 64 DS, you choose to play entirely using the stylus, or entirely using the D-pad.

In New Super Mario Bros, you play entirely using the buttons.

In Metroid, you choose to play entirely using the stylus, or entirely using the buttons (and the stylus works so, so much better for FPS).

Ah, but...I never used the term Dust Collecting. You did. :p

Unless there are games you specifically want that are PSP only my vote is for the DS as well. I own a DS (and occasionally play a PSP at work) and I enjoy the DS games more. As others have stated the PSP tries to be a "mini" console and it doesn't pull it off well, IMO (jack of all trades, master of none). Many of the games feel watered-down or hamstrung by the limitations of the PSP. On the other hand, the DS typically offers purpose built games that are designed to be played handheld, on the go, in short bursts, and w/the stylus so that's why I think the games are usually better (again, IMO).

You guys have me so confused. The reason why i sold the PSP then was because then the games sucked. Recently the games have imporved. They both look like appealing systems now, and i dont think i can make a bad decision. I think i may go treat my self to a ds lite this weekend though, only because i havent tried it yet.

Maybe ill buy both, because i am gangster like that.

I tried to be gangster, but I think I tried too soon. The PSP literally had nothing when I bought mine.

If you want to demo a DS to see what it can do in terms of innovative gameplay and even the kind of graphics it can produce-

Metroid Prime Hunters - combines quite good graphics (a step above PS1 in any case), and the first usable FPS control method for a handheld. It's a bit of a triumph in any case. Just utterly spoiled by hackers.
Kirby Canvas Curse- something entirely new. It only uses the touchscreen and works really well. Very frantic too.
Advance Wars, Pokemon, Tetris or Meteos- to see how addictive games can be.

I'd even say Nintendogs. Revitalised the virtual pet sim for me did that. Lost in Blue uses the DS in some strange ways! Brain Age too. Can't forget Brain Age. It's got it all.

I owned a DS Lite last summer and sold it in about a month. The games were fun but besides the games, there wasn't anything else to do. I'm about to buy a PSP and play around with it's capabilities.

Except for the games that I see people playing where they are holding the stylus because they have to use it with the A and B buttons.

(and the stylus works so, so much better for FPS).
Not really sure how this works, but for some reason I keep thinking 'whack-a-mole' :D

Ah, but...I never used the term Dust Collecting. You did. :p
Yes, I did. Jokingly in a post that wasn't even directed at you. And I wasn't the first person to even use the term 'Dust Collecting'. :p

*looks through own collection* Nope, nothing there that uses the stylus and face buttons together.

Oh wait, there are games like Nanostray, Mario and Tony Hawk that use the screen to hold extra buttons. Is this what you mean? Because you just "touch" the touchscreen. You don't use a stylus to draw anything or move something around.
Devs know this and there isn't a game I can think of that uses both. Games-
-Use the touchscreen for extra buttons, along with the d-pad and face buttons. (The 3 I mentioned above)
-Use the touchscreen as an alternative method of control, achieving the same result (Animal Crossing)
-Disregard either the touchscreen or face buttons alltogether, for traditional or new types of games.
-(late edit) touchscreen only used for menu navigation or mini games.

there is no hot swopping ;)

Could be. But like I said, I've seen people with their thumbs on the A and B buttons with they stylus in their hand. Maybe they just like the feeling.

To anyone interested, on the 23rd of June, 2 new colours of DS Lite are being released in Japan. If you don't mind importing, www.ncsx.com and www.play-asia.com are sure to have some.

On the moon.
I've had both, and I have enjoyed my PSP a lot more.

Sure, some of the games are ports, but there is some neat games coming down the pipeline.

Another great thing about it is if you get the Open Edition Firmware done by Dark-Alex installed onto it.

I did that, then used PopStation to rip Castlevania Symphony of the Night into being playable on my PSP.

The graphics look beautiful and sharp on the screen, and man, is that game friggin' awesome.

Actually, I've been reading around the emulation possibilities of the PSP and, to be honest, I'm very very tempted to splash out on one now. The possiblity to play the whole library of PS1 games sounds quite incredible, as well as Mega Drive (genesis), Master System, Snes, NES, Gameboy, MAME and other games sounds, well, brilliant.

Who needs a 360 or PS3. It looks like a DS and PSP will suit me fine. :D
