While they do "live" together, DSS will free up spectrum for whichever technology needs it most (in a nutshell).
Which in a sense is good because 5G radios have greater capacity, right? That means that if there are many devices, some of them 5G, it might move them from LTE to 5G to use the spectrum more efficiently

Verizon has some work to do. The tower less than a mile from my house has both 5G and LTE. Same signal strength, but DL speeds are consistently twice as fast with LTE compared to 5G. So yea, they do have 5G in many areas. They just don't tell you it's slower too. I also tested elsewhere around town, and the same results. Except in the the downtown area that has 5G UW. Then it's super fast. I find it amusing that in my city of 200,000 we have 5G UW in the downtown area while much larger cities are still waiting.

From all the reading I have done, you are correct. Although my guess is that Verizon will have any 5G devices on the 5G portion first, and when that gets crowded, move people to LTE.

The other side of the coin is that Verizon does need mid-band spectrum badly. The lag behind T-Mobile (by a lot) and AT&T. That's why the upcoming spectrum auction is so important to them. They are expected to bid aggressively for a good chuck of the available spectrum.

Agreed. Verizon has some work to do regarding 5G. They have a reputation of managing their network well, and I'm surprised they got behind the 8 ball on this...

So funny. I learned the hard way - in settings - that our current unlimited family share plan does not include 5G. The plans that do and which also include HD video would raise our total bill by $10/mo. Since we're hardly out of the house anyway, not doing that for now, especially given the speeds shown here.

LTE speeds/latency are considerably better, but never that great here. I have yet to update my plan to one that supports 5G UW though; no need to do that until travel is a normal thing again.

Verizon combines 5G and LTE on their coverage maps for a huge reason. Hide were the really don’t have 5G and excuse why could be on either.

But T-Mobile has lots of mid-band spectrum and more coming soon from Sprint. They’ll have decent nationwide 5G speeds before the others. Verizon and AT&T have complained to the FCC that T-Mobile shouldn’t be allowed to bid on more spectrum.

They shouldn’t be allowed. They have exceeded the (recommended?) threshold set by the FCC.

It’s broken out here. Zoom in.

I think AT&T has done the same With their coverage map.
