I was at my local Apple Store 30 minutes before they opened and was told the same thing. They also said they didn't know if they were getting any later today or tomorrow.
What's up with the "regular shipments" thing?
Oh I know but I was told yesterday to come back today because they were going to be getting daily shipments. Now it seems they aren't getting any today and they don't know if they're getting any tomorrow either. I did end up getting my wife a MBP and the Powerbeats 3 instead of the Airpods so I think I'm done with the Airpod safari. My BB Airpod order shipped this morning and will arrive Thursday. My Apple order is still processing for 12/29 so I'm set for now.
Abandoned my 8am store trip after seeing the store pickup option go live and hearing a couple of bad experiences this morning on the east coast.
Guess I'll be sitting and refreshing the store pickup page all day.

I guess the real question is are they going to let their mid-day shipments show up using this tool, or are they strictly for walk-in customers? Is there a distinction here? I just hate having to hover around the store and wait on hold for hours to ask a simple stock question multiple times per day.
Don't think the stores will have any more.

Well I was looking a little while ago and a store about 100 miles from me showed available for pickup and now it shows Feb. 8 again. I think they are real time.
I'm pretty sure it's real time. I've seen a few change today. Waiting for the stores around me to get them. I saw at 2:03pm one at West 14th in Manhattan and some at Soho... By 2:07 they were gone.
Didn't want to travel down there in the bitter cold today. Waiting for it to come closer to where I am.

I have been watching Istock as well today. They seem to pop up at random places. The one time they popped up in MN I clicked and they were gone. Its like playing whack a mole
I have a feeling they are deliberately not heavily stocking the retail Apple Stores to help fulfill many of their online orders. My 12/29 order along with many others went to PFS today coincidentally when many of the Apple stores didn't get shipments. They probably saw a lot of cancellations after people started getting fulfilled by BB and Verizon so the hurried up. Just a theory...
I lucked out and snagged a pair yesterday at an Apple Store in Pittsburgh. I was waiting at the genius bar for my phone, and had asked about the AirPods - I was informed they received two shipments already and they were gone. Twenty minutes later, I asked another rep who checked the stock again and told me to hold on, they might have gotten more (a third shipment). A few minutes later she came back with a pair in hand.
For me to was worth the 1/2 wait in line before the open yesterday - snagged 2 sets
I stood there this morning but they didn't have any. Told me to wait til the truck arrived at 10 (which is normal open time). I waited until 11:30 and they said they didn't have any.
I did that today. Got there at 8:15am. They watched us standing outside in 20 degrees. They opened the door at 9am. And told me and the nice lady in front of us, no AirPods. Now, I'll just keep using the inventory tracker.
