Literally the same thing just happened to my Airpods Max. The genius told me that there may be a firmware issue, but unfortunately there is not an end-user means of updating that. The best option provided was to call 1-800-my-apple and see what can be done whether it is a "software" issue that can be sent to their repairshop or have to pay up $300 for a refurbished replacement set. 😕
I sent also mine to the Genus Bar; they took it for 72hs for testing, the result?: "We dont know what happened..."

Heh that sounds eerily familiar, “maybe give your headphones time to charge to green, then try pairing it” yeah like if that had worked before, I wouldn’t be having this interaction 🤣
