This makes perfect sense - people saying "WTF, they got the size wrong and now they're changing the name?" have got it all wrong. Apple never called this the SE2 (they haven't mectioned it at all, of course). It was dubbed the "SE2" by some analyst, or (more likely) random website. This phone is a natural successor to the 8 and never had anything to do with the SE, except in hopeful minds of the SE faithful. The only name more appropriate than "9" would be "8S".

I expect that Apple feels there's no worry about the two naming schemes (6/7/8/[9] and 10/11/12) overlapping , because this (the old) line won't go past a "9S" - they'll have fully moved into the 11/12/13/… lineup by that point.

Oh so we're just posting whatever now I guess.

There is no way in hell they are calling this the iPhone 9...

EDIT: I was confused about whether they used to print the model designation on the rear of iPhones.

This makes no sense.

What would this supposed iPhone 9’s successor be named? The iPhone 10, written with numbers, instead of X?

Given that the original SE wasn't called the iPhone 6.8, I believe SE2 is very logical. People judge an iPhones worth at resale based on the sequential #. Everyone knows that the SE came out as a pause/interruption of that system about the time of the iPhone 6/6S. iPhone 9 disrupts both of those concepts. The average user is intelligent enough to know it premiered about the time of the iPhone 11, SE2 is completely appropriate...whereas iPhone 9 only serves to confuse.

Reminds me of when Apple said "**** it" and released Mac OS 8 and 9 as interim releases while they finished-up Mac OS X. (OS 8 was originally intended to be the big next-gen release, but that was a disaster that never made it out of development.)

I was actually expecting an iPhone 9 beside the iPhone XS generation.

I don't get why anyone would be interested in this 5 times warmed up old design. In 2020! You could have bought this years ago. And please don't tell me anyone needs an A13 cheap. It's a cellphone, not a Macbook

An A13 in a new iPhone is absolutely necessary, even in the budget phone! Of course no one buying this needs that power today, but it future-proofs their purchase, increasing its value to a price conscious buyer

Great news as I understand that there would still be hope for a true iPhone SE replacement, i.e. with the same smaller form factor.

Stop this nonsense. Apple should name iPhones in the same way they name Macs and iPads - by size and meaningless word like "air," "mini," and "pro," and we can refer to generations by the year they launched.

4.0" iPhone Mini
4.7" iPhone Air
5.5" iPhone Air
5.8" iPhone Pro
6.1" iPhone
6.5" iPhone Pro

So one would say: "Check out my new iPhone Pro, yea it's the 5.8" model. I decided my older late-2016 iPhone Air was due for an upgrade. I considered buying the late-2018 6.5" Pro on the refurb store, but decided against it."

Seeing that 9 is my lucky number and that I need to upgrade my 6 this really is shaping up like the best iPhone to get.
11 is too bulky, too big, FaceID, notch and expensive for me. This on the otherhand looks like the perfect phone. Lighter, smaller, one hand usage fine, TouchID and bonus - cheap. Win win win win :)
