this morning there was a Safari-Catalina update, which I installed.
as usually, I did a reboot into safe-mode.
don't know, but I always do that after an update.
booted into normal mode, no problem really.

did put my MBA in sleep-mode.
went for coffee and woke my MBA up afterwards.
no crash, no reboot

is the problem solved ??
may be yes, may be no :cool::cool:

well,
I changed the power setting for battery operation back to sleep after 15 mins.
went away for a few hours, and on return, my MBA woke up, without any problems.
seems to work fine for me.

That's sad.
By the way I found that Safari 15.3 can't save (Command + S) web page correctly, because cursor doesn't work, I can't click anything in this window, for changing the path, canceling or saving (but ESC and RETURN do work). Do you have the same problem ?

I don't know if this will help you, but I have noticed strange problems suddenly appear after macOS updates. People report this in various threads too. The solution *seems to be* recovery-reinstall the OS.

- M1 MBP started suffering odd restarts after installing 11.6.2 in December; never had the problem before. After several weeks, I upgraded to Monterey and the problem was gone. When I looked up the issue I was seeing, others had reported it going back to May 2020; but not for me!
- Mac Mini on Catalina started having problem after either Dec '21 or Jan '22 Security Update (UI becomes sluggish, then freezes, then eventually restarts). Never saw this problem in 2 yrs... otherwise quiet stable system. Will be reinstalling OS in coming days.

My point is that sometimes things seem to get mucked up in updates (or even out of box). After a little troubleshooting, I would do Recovery mode reinstall of latest relevant OS. Does not always seem to work, but it is probably the best approach. YMMV.

I've also noticed that browsers tend to get more than 100% of CPU (fans are spinning super loud) after I wake up my Mac. Both Chrome and Safari. I have to force quit them and open again. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Didn't happen before the whole Security Update thing.

A further update – I realised that the full Big Sur installer I downloaded didn't include the latest safari and security updates. I installed those last night. The Mac slept and didn't reboot itself overnight, so that aspect seems OK – but I'm back to being unable to play streaming content in safari. Perhaps this is a separate issue, or has anyone else had this problem?

Rolled back Catalina Security Update 2022-001 due to reboot during sleep bug. Have not had problem running concurrently with Safari Version 15.3 (15612.4.9.1.8). Now installed Security Update 2022-002. So far no sleep bug (will update if necessary). Question is, does 2022-002 quash the sleep bug in 2022-001? Would appreciate any experience of those running both updates concurrently, as have already rolled back OS *twice* to figure out that 001 is definitely causing the bug.

Thanks for the heads up about the new Security Update 2022-002 Catalina, @Twovr. Have just installed it on top of my existing, buggy (post Security Update 2022-001 Catalina install) MacBook Air. Will report back in a day or two if no more unexpected shut downs occur while sleeping.

Unlike Security Update 2022-001 Catalina, the 1.5GB Security Update 2022-002 Catalina has not been granted a dedicated link or explanation beyond "This update has no published CVE entries" and the release date (14 Feb 2022) on the main Apple security updates page.

In my case, I've tried 2022-001 and Safari 4.9.1.8 in the same time, but the bug remained. So probably 2022-02 solves it, maybe let's wait the report from Kahakapao and Twovr (cause I've also reinstalled 2 or 3 times : )

I confess I don't know what a CVE entry is (I assume something security related?) but I see that the new Big Sur 11.6.4 update says the same. I wonder if these updates are fixing things broken by the previous security updates? I haven't experimented yet...

I figure it could be reports of security issues. So if there is no CVE for this patch, that would mean there is no security bugs fixed, probably it's released just for reboot bug, why not ? since Apple never puts two security updates out so frequently.

Argh, the problem is back! Kernel panic and restart while sleeping, on Big Sur 11.6.3. I know this is a Catalina forum, but I ended up on Big Sur because of the problem with the Catalina security update, and now it seems to be happening also on Big Sur too. I got this error message:

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff801326041a): Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while calling power state change callbacks. Suspected bundle: com.apple.driver.AppleIntelICLLPGraphicsFramebuffer. Thread 0xa01b.

The only bits I understand are panic and sleep...

I guess I try 11.6.4 now (out today) and see if that's any better (or 'less bad').

That would be consistent with my experience that Safari 15.3 (15612.4.9.1.8) is unrelated to the reboot on sleep behavior. It's caused by Security Update 2022-001 Catalina. Await report from Kahakapao whether Security Update 2022-002 quashes the bug (accidentally or on purpose).

This thread saved me from endless reboots on my 2020 MBP 13", too. After macOS Catalina Security Update 2022-001, I was getting the same shutdown in sleep multiple times a day. I reinstalled Catalina 10.15.7 last night and so far things have been stable.

Any word on whether the just released Security Update 2022-002 fixes the issue?

Hello!

I've updated my MacBook Air 2020 (Intel) with the latest security update 2022-001 and it started to reboot after going to sleep. When it boots again it shows the error screen, but sometimes it doesn't. This happens when I'm just closing the laptop or when it goest to sleep itself. I've tried to reset nvram, boot into a safe mode but nothing helps.

I've also contacted Apple Support and they couldn't help either. They recommended to wipe everything out or install Catalina again.

Does anyone have a similar issue? Thanks!

So far so good, everyone. I have put the 2020 MacBook Air to sleep and wakened it repeatedly and not a single hiccup yet. Before installing Security Update 2022-002 Catalina, it would shut down while sleeping almost every other time (manually putting it to sleep before shutting the lid as suggested by @jent seemed to help stave off the inevitable a few more times).

Could just be a glitch, but after installing Security Update 2022-002 Catalina, no longer see the option to install Security Update 2022-001. Based on what I've learned up to now:
1. Ignore Update 2022-001, and just install 2022-002, if that's still an option;
2. Install Update 2022-002 on top of 2022-001 and see if that works (like Kahakapao); or
3. Roll back to pre-Update 2022-001 system software (which *should* eliminate the issue smunro), then install only Update 2022-002.
