Below is a list of major USA retailers that support contactless payment (and therefore Apple Pay). Please add only retailers supporting contactless today, not retailers promising future support.

General Information
  • Merchants with fragmented or inconsistent contactless (notably, petro/c-store merchants) should be listed as Not Accepted.
  • You can use Mastercard's locator service (iOS app here) to find nearby merchants accepting contactless payment. tmiw also runs a crowd-sourced site that tracks chip and contactless acceptance.
  • Franchised, licensed, or otherwise contracted stores may have different payments systems, and contactless may or may not work as a result. For example, Apple Pay will not work at Starbucks kiosks inside Safeway, as they use Safeway's point-of-sale system.

They don't use a different system. Many 7-11's have disabled NFC on their terminals to save money.

You can use this app from MasterCard to see where NFC payments are accepted.

I wouldnt rely on that page or app. I just tried Tim Hortons who has been accepting NFC for a year now using their Tim Hortons app. They were also listed on the MasterCard list. It sorta recognized ApplePay but when I tried to confirm it kept erroring out.

Has anyone successfully tried it at Jack in the Box? Ours only has one mounted on the drive-thru, but I haven't had a chance to try it out.

There is going to be a lot of growing pains between retailers and consumers over the next year. I've been using Google Wallet for 2 years now and it has not been easy with retailers like Best Buy purposefully shutting off their PayPass systems. Thankfully, Apple has gotten in the game and thanks to the sheer amount of users that have bought iPhone 6's it will finally force retailers to make NFC payment systems a priority.

Agree - but now that card companies are willing to give merchants the card present fee (vs the higher card not present fee) for Apple Pay merchants are more likely to have NFC turned on.

It depends. The merchant is responsible for upkeep and maintenance of the machines. If businesses lose more money from having NFC's terminals maintained than people actually using them, I can see them being turned off. At that point they have zero incentive to keep Apple Pay or any other NFC based service. This is obviously a worse case scenario.

Just went to Rubios. The fish taco places. Accepted Apple pay flawlessly.

Went to Walgreens last night. Perfect experience. I even signed up for one of their rewards programs, because I intend to shop there more often now. haha.

Additionally, can anyone confirm any gas stations that have NFC terminals at the pump? Per the mastercard app, there is NFC at the Kum & Go gas station, but I checked one next to the walgreens last night and there was no NFC at the pump. I realized they probably have NFC inside, but there's no way I'll go inside just for the "convenience" of using apple pay :p

I think most Exxon stations have it at the pump. I could be wrong though. It would be handy to know if BP is that way as well so we can update the wiki.

My local Chevron, which just opened about 3 weeks ago, does not accept Apple Pay or any other NFC based system. The only explanation I can think of is that maybe it applies only to company-owned stores as opposed to franchised stores?

I just tried using Apple Pay at OfficeMax. iPhone recognized the reader, asked me to confirm with the finger print, but after a few moments, the cashier said that it was 'declined'. I used the physical card and it went through without issue.

Just tried a Shop Rite supermarket in NY that has the terminals and is in the MasterCard Nearby app, but they are dead. The cashier said that they aren't working; he had tried himself.

Does having NFC enabled cost the companies money somehow?

How much money does it cost to maintain an NFC reader? Hell, it has less moving parts than a magstripe reader.

Yes. The terminals cost more per month and the fees for NFC being enabled are higher. One would expect the costs to go down in the next year or so though.

Seems odd that the companies want merchants to adopt the new tech, but then charge more money to them for using it, even though the cost has already been sunk (they HAVE the readers, they're just disabled).

Don't they realize they'll get more adoption of the tech if they don't do this?
