By the way. This thread is pretty old so the above poll is no longer relevant.

I've downgraded this post to a simple list of friend codes. Simple is better.

The list has more friend codes than the maximum amount you'll be able to enter in your roster. You might want to pick friend codes close to your timezone first. Names at the bottom of the list have been submitted more recently so there are better chances that those newer players are still playing.

I will post my code here when I get the game, however in two or three days I'll be sending my DS in for repairs from Nintendo and I won't be able to play for a week or two :(

I'll be posting my code here, too, when I finally get the game tonight. Here's hoping my wife or I can actually find it without too much trouble. :)

Oh, my time zone is PST and I'll probably be using Praxis for my name (that's the name on my Nintendo.com account).

The column I titled "DS Name" makes reference to the name you entered when you first configured your DS. I'm prety sure it's the one Mario KArt is gonna use. It can be changed in the settings of the DS.

Edit: DS Name can be also be directly changed in the Mario Kart "Option" -> "Edit" menu. (Limited to 10 characters)

Do you guys think that Friend Codes should be kept secret? What is the risk of having it displayed online?

I don't have a problem with my Friend Code being displayed online.... I don't think hiding it would serve much purpose, because we -want- people to get to it, and there's no meaningful way to police who joins and who doesn't. I guess we could make people jump through some hoops to join, but that's a hassle for everyone, and only deters the lazy troublemakers. And besides, how much trouble can you cause on this game? The best you can do (that I know of) is to drop out of races that you are losing. And this is remedied by just removing the offender from the list. Am I right in assuming that both parties need to have each other's friend code to compete against each other in friend mode?

I don't have any ideas for an official name yet. However, just discussing a MK group name makes me recall with fondness Phi Koopa Troopa, the fake fraternity my friends and I invented in college. We were definitely into our Mario Kart. I may have to see if I can resurrect PKT. :)

Agreed. I only mentioned it because the forums admin at Nintendo.com recommend not posting it. I guess it has more to do with risking having old pervs joining kids in game and starting talking funny. :D Just wanted to make sure there weren't ant REAL technical risks.

Can anyone tell me whether I can use my DS tunneling through Powerbook ethernet connection via the airport card? Or do I have to own a standalone router such as Airport Base Station? I hope I can because it would be a shame to have to spend over $100 just to play Mario Kart, when xlink kai let's me play my PSP online with my current setup.

Sorry if this is off topic, but I already searched the wifi thread and didn't see any answers to this question.

Thanks

and if any of you manage to pull yourselves away from the game itself in order to share your online impressions, either in this or in another thread, I'd be happy to read them.

I don't know, but this was something I was considering doing myself, except with my Mac mini. I have a wireless router set up, but because I am using WPA encryption, I will have to change my configuration to play online. I'm planning to look into it for at least a few minutes tonight when I get home, and I'll let you know how it goes. If it's not a quick thing, I'll probably just reconfigure my router and the machines that use it.

My impression, from what I've read about this game, is that there isn't any in-game chat at all. No voice chat due to technical limitations at this point (my understanding is that it would slow the game down), and I haven't read about any text-based way of chatting in this game, either. Has anyone heard anything different? Did the Nintendo.com forums admin give a reason for not sharing the friend code on this game specifically? I can see it being more of an issue for younger gamers on other games that allow in-game communication, for exactly the reason you mentioned, but I'm not sure I know of any argument against sharing the friend codes for Mario-Kart DS in particular.

I think they originally planned to have in game text chatting but it might have been dropped somewhere along the way. I'm sure I read about it on some Nintendo DS website.

Nintendo did not give any reasons about not sharing the Friend Code. It's simply a warning posted at the top of thier forums page. Here is how it reads: "Remember to NEVER reveal any personal information in chat groups or forums. Please also do not reveal Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Friend Codes on forums."

I've read conflicting reports about your code being the same for all game or game specific. I'll dig for more info.

Hello fellow Mario Kart fans. It looks like many of us will soon be happy owners of Mario Kart DS.

It could be fun to play against each others online from time to time.

We could use this thread to trade "Friend Codes" and schedule Races.

I'll update this first post with a list of MacRumors members who want to join the League

Q1: Do you guys think that Friend Codes should be kept secret? What is the risk of having it displayed online?

Edit: I ask because the forums admin at Nintendo.com recommend not posting it. I guess it has more to do with risking having old pervs joining kids in game and starting talking funny. I'll post mine…*and if any old farts start telling stuff to me about their weewees, I'll simply throw a bunch of red koopa shells their way.
No problem with that, as there is no chat, so no one can just keep chatting and bugging you with foul language. There is no way to find out your personal info via friend code? right?

- Something in the lines of "Phi Koopa Troopa", a fake college fraternity [Agilus]

I'm surprised that the D-Pad was that responsive. It required some twitchy movements but it was great driving. I got online at McDonalds too. The network seems to be having problems though.

Praxis, I entered your frind code in my DS but it told me it was incorrect. Maybe it has something with the Nintendo WiFi connection having problems right now.

Edit: Typo. Corrected.

Sounds interesting. I think we'll give it a try. Let's just wait a few days so we have a final League name.
