Many people have received their iPad Pro Magic Keyboard and most are not impressed by the materials that are used. It will get really dirty over time and won't age well, based on experiences with all other covers with the same material. Mine will arrive today and I thought, let me see if a skin or something exists for covers and it does! Both Slickwraps and DecalGirl have skins for the Smart Folio and Folio Keyboard:

I can only assume a skin will soon arrive for the Magic Keyboard too! Would this be something people will use on day one or later down the line when the cover starts to look bad? And does someone here have any experience with these skins on their covers?

I have two years of AppleCare on my new keyboard, I don’t use it with bacon grease all over my hands, and I’ve found the material holds up fine. If there’s any reason to use a “solution” like these tape skins on the thing, it’s for cosmetics, not function. I will concede that the thing is a bit understated, but that’s fine. Beats fake carbon to be sure.

Will there be problems when a skin is removed - will it pull on the vinyl MKB cover enough to separate it from what it's glued to? I realize you don't know, but I think it's a potential issue.

That would be my concern too - this can happen with some stickers...

I’m torn on this, I think the skin is a good idea... or even stickers which should help hide any dirt/wear. Downside is what happens when you come to sell it a few years down the line?

My solution has always been the same.

I explain there's stickers on it, I sell it at a discount because it's heavily used. If they don't want, oh, well. I've found that whether or not you have stickers on the case, people will always try to lowball you anyways, or ask that it be thrown in for free. So I've accepted that I'll be the only owner, they can go buy their own at whatever the current price is. I got my money's worth, I don't care if I toss it, or throw it in.

I wonder if the companies that offer skins will offer something to cover the left and right of the trackpad? How thick are these skins? Would they damage the iPad's glass when closed?

I emailed Dbrand who said they may make one but I used to have a toast wooden skin for my 2018 SKF which was brilliant and looked really good even for the price. A total nightmare to remove as it left glue all over the folio but once clean with alcohol left no lasting marks.

Aaah good to hear you can actually remove it, clean it and have it back to how it was. I saw someone on YouTube who said the same thing, so that’s reassuring.

I would probably use a skin when it starts to age, but not from day one. I just got mine and I really really love it! Much lighter than expected, much better quality than expected, the keyboard is amazing and the trackpad super fast and smooth. I’m happy :)

Since I couldn't find skins specifically for the AMK, I used textured contact paper because I was seeing smudges and it was driving me crazy. It's not perfect, but so far, no rolled edges or lifting.

Very nicely done. Where did you purchase the textured contact paper?
I believe that I bought it from Home Depot years ago for a project, but I’m sure that you could find at Target, Walmart, Amazon, or other similar retailer. It’s a liner for kitchen drawers or shelving units.

There’s a seller on Etsy selling them for almost $100 for the 12.9” version. I’d like to get some because the finger prints are smudges on the outside are driving me nuts. But I refuse to pay that much.

That actually looks really good! How did you get the corners to round so nicely and separate the pieces on the back? Just a steady hand and scissors and a knife?

I think this shows that a wrap or skin could be a pretty nice solution.

I used a razor blade, medical scissors and really steady hand. I checked on Amazon, and they have a huge selection of contact paper which I'm looking through in case I get bored with what is currently on the AMK.

Does anyone know the exact dimensions for the MK and SMF with regard to the hinge on the back as I’m Wondering if the hinge fell at the same point could we could use a SKF skin and just make the cutout bigger assuming the hinges fall at the same point

I used a Decal Girl skin for the 12.9” Smart Keyboard Folio. I just carefully cut the corner off of it to accommodate the camera cutout. It will do—doesn’t even look all that bad.

Edit: I’m not super worried about the palm rests, because I really don’t rest my hands on anything when I type. If someone makes some though, I might consider them just in case.

Also, for anyone wondering—I had a Decal Girl decal on my 11” Smart Keyboard Folio from day one all the way up until two weeks ago when I sold it. It came off without doing any damage to the folio exterior. I wouldn’t recommend carelessly ripping it off as hard as you can though—just go slow and be careful. It shouldn’t hurt anything.

Do you mind sharing a photo? I was considering just ordering a DecalGirl to see how it fits.

Here are pictures of the front and back with the Decal Girl skin. For good measure, I also included the pic of the back of the iPad Pro with the dBrand Dragon Skin.

I think DecalGirls iPad Pro 2020 Smart Keyboard Folio skin would actually fit: https://www.decalgirl.com/skins/apple-smart-keyboard-ipad-pro-12-3g-4g-skins

I can only assume that a Magic Keyboard specific skin will come soon, but for those who can’t wait they could get that one. I also asked Slickwraps if they have something planned, but no response as of yet.

Personally I would get something like this:

My DecalGirl Smart Keyboard decal came today. It actually works quite well on the Magic Keyboard. There’s a bit of a gap, but not as bad as I thought it might be. I’m going to re-order in a darker color as it’ll make it less obvious. I’m a sucker for their blush marble which is why I went with that.

Forget Slickwraps, unless you don't mind getting zero response and waiting forever for your order to "process". I ordered from Sopiguard, and received the skin in less than a week. Their skins cover front, back, inside above the keyboard, to either side of the trackpad, and the trackpad itself if you want (I elected not to do so as I think it would take away from the tactility of the device).

Definitely go darker! The gap is less noticeable.
